António Madeira White 2022
António Madeira White 2022
This white 2022 from António Madeira comes from various vineyards owned by partners from whom António buys the grapes. Some of the vines are young (20/30 years old) and others are older (60/70 years old). These vineyards are home to a wide variety of indigenous grape varieties, including Encruzado, Bical, Malvasia Fina and Cerceal.
Vinification
Alcoholic fermentation by indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation was also carried out. Ageing for 11 months, 50% in French oak barrels and 50% in stainless steel. The final batch was aged for a further 4 months in stainless steel.
Bottling without fining or filtration to preserve the wine's flavour characteristics and its ability to evolve in the bottle.
Producer Tasting notes
A terroir wine, committed to showing the beauties of the Dão at the foot of the Serra da Estrela. Deep, very characterful, pure fruit, floral notes, wet granite. Fresh, tense, elegant and full-bodied, with a saline mouth that begs for another glass. Flavourful, long and intense finish of wet granite.

So far a much simpler aroma than the 2021, more straightforwardly fruity and even a touch floral (jasmine?). Citrus and quince. Creamy, gentle and yet very fresh and then at the very end that chalky texture appears. Needs time to gain complexity but it has great freshness and purity and, for a young wine, a wide range of flavours and textures. You can just see the beginning of some of the flavours that are now more obvious in the 2021, the cedar, the salty aftertaste. (JH)
