António Madeira Vinhas Velhas Tinto 2020
António Madeira Vinhas Velhas Red 2020
This Vinhas Velhas 2020 red is the result of combining the various small plots of old vines cultivated by Antonio with dedication. It was awarded wine of the week by JancisRobinson.com by its great quality at a good price.
Vinification:
The different plots were vinified and aged separately. Alcoholic fermentation took place naturally with indigenous yeasts in open vats.
Little extraction was sought, working by "infusion" in search of the elegance and finesse characteristic of the region. The wine was then transferred to used French oak barrels, where it underwent malolactic fermentation until the following spring and aged for 18 months. This was followed by a further 6 months of ageing and harmonisation of the blend in stainless steel.
Producer Tasting notes
Relatively open colour. Pure, complex, granite nose enveloped in stone fruit, peach, cherry, plum, sensations of aromatic herbs, flowers and pine forest. Great balance and freshness in a fluid, crystalline mouth, very pure and flavoursome. Fine, soft tannins. Very long mineral finish.

Completely different colour from the 2019: much darker and more saturated. The aroma is savoury and deep, still with that fine impression of stone dust that makes me think of the granite terroir. Not as floral as the 2019 and fuller, more thickly textured, a touch of spice and more brooding. Satisfying wine with chewy texture and still with great freshness and length. Powerful and needs more time in bottle than the 2019. And definitely needs food if you open it soon. (JH)
