Susana Esteban Foudre 2022
Susana Esteban Foudre 2022
Susana Esteban Foudre 2022 comes from an exceptional 80-year-old vineyard in the Serra de São Mamede, at an altitude of 700 metres. It is an exciting wine, fine and sophisticated in aroma and on the palate, with a full and crystalline flavour, immaculate in texture, juicy with a mineral vibrancy, absolutely charming and inimitable, which lingers on the aftertaste and even longer in the memory. Produced by Susana Esteban, a renowned oenologist who, in 2012, was awarded the title of ‘Oenologist of the Year’ by Revista de Vinhos, being the only woman to achieve this honour to date.
Vinification: Manual harvesting in 20kg boxes with rigorous selection at the entrance to the winery. It was vinified in a 1961 Alsatian Foudre with a capacity of 1150 litres, where it was aged for 16 months.
Tasting Notes: The nose impresses from the first moment with its intensity and peculiarity, the result of the combination of the aroma of the mountain vineyards with the hue of the Foudre, which gives it a unique complexity that is transmitted in the mouth where it is broad and deep and mineral.
Grape Varieties: A blend of traditional grape varieties from Serra de São Mamede

Wine that is thrilling beyond perfection. It transcends the senses with the golden ratio of its balance. Fine and sophisticated in aroma and on the palate, full-flavoured and crystalline, immaculate in texture, juicy with a mineral vibrancy. Absolutely enchanting and inimitable, it lingers in the aftertaste and even longer in the memory.
Now in its third edition, this Foudre has almost returned to its origins. On the first wine, we wrote: ‘Think of a spectacular wine. A white from old vines in the Serra de São Mamede, aged in a vat that Susana bought in Alsace when she did the Sidecar with journalist Jorge Lucki’.
The Foudre comes from an 80-year-old vineyard planted at an altitude of 700 metres. It was vinified in a 1961 Alsatian foudre with a capacity of 1150 litres, where it aged for 16 months.
In the most recent vintage to reach the market, the wine condenses almost 15 years of adventures and the winemaker's search for the granite of the Portalegre area, in the north of Alentejo, whose style is marked by the precision of clean, fine wines. Intense, aromatic, mineral, the ageing in foudre gives it enormous complexity, as only wines from the Serra de S. Mamede can.
A perfect white. Textured, deep, vigorous, broad, long, fresh, sharp. It's Beatles, Tom Jobim, Cole Porter and Debussy.
