    Niepoort Batuta 2021

With grapes from two plots of land, the carril vineyard which is over 70 years old and old vines which are around 100 years old, Batuta 2021 is the result of delicate vinification with prolonged maceration but with reduced extraction in order to obtain a fine and elegant wine which is at the same time complex.

Producer's tasting notes: Batuta 2021 has a very concentrated colour with violet tones. The nose begins delicately with notes of violet, raspberry and rhubarb, and then reveals hints of graphite, fresh herbs and spices. The palate is fresh and delicate, with a precise structure and tannins, and a spicy, persistent finish. It's young but has a long life ahead of it.

    Niepoort Batuta 2021:

The grapes used to produce this wine come from the Carril vineyard, a vineyard over 70 years old facing north, and from old vines around 100 years old near Quinta de Nápoles. Batuta is the result of delicate vinification, with long macerations but little extraction, where every detail is carefully considered to produce a complex, fine and elegant wine. It is full of concentration, typical of the Douro's old vines, but at the same time fresh and delicate.

    Vinification:

The year 2021 saw higher than expected production. In the case of Quinta de Nápoles, this increase in production was in the region of 50% compared to the previous year. The 2021 harvest began on 11 August, with excellent indicators, musts with high acidity, low alcohol, very hard skins, resulting in very balanced wines, both white and red.

In September, the unstable weather led to a peak in the number of grapes entering the winery and different maturities depending on the geographical location. After careful selection, both in the vineyard and in the winery, fermentation took place in stainless steel vats, with skin maceration for around 80 days. After the long maceration, the wine aged for around 20 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new wood.

    TASTING NOTES

The Batuta, Quinta de Nápoles and Robustus red trio are our most structured range of wines without losing Niepoort's signature elegance and freshness. The colour is concentrated with violet tones. The nose starts off delicate with notes of violet, raspberry and rhubarb, and then reveals hints of graphite, fresh herbs and spices. On the palate it has a pleasant freshness and acidity, structure and precise tannins, with a spicy and persistent finish. It's young, but has a long life ahead of it.

The 2021 Batuta is the only red that is produced 100% with destemmed grapes, and it fermented with very long macerations (like an infusion) of up to four months, looking for very tight tannins with tension but without being aggressive. It matured in 228-liter oak barrels, 25% of them new, for some 18 months. But the wine is not oaky at all, especially in this cooler 2021 vintage, when it comes through as very young and elegant and light on its feet. It has only 12% alcohol and a velvety palate with very elegant, fine-grained and round tannins; it is sleek, polished and seamless, with a very tasty finish, almost salty too. It comes from very old vines planted with a field blend of local varieties, from two vineyards that fermented separately. The vineyards are very different—one high altitude, windy and healthy and the other one shady, with lots of humidity and not a lot of sunlight—and, when blended together, they make for a very complete and nuanced red. It has freshness, wild fruit, concentration and lightness. They changed this wine to this new profile and concept in 2018. I love it! 7,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.
