Vinha do Sobreiro 2016

An elegant and complex wine that highlights the beauty of Touriga Franca. With floral and fruity aromas, soft tannins and a long finish, this wine is perfect for lovers of Douro wines.

Winemaking Vineyards: The grapes are harvested by hand in small boxes, and fermentation takes place in a granite press.

Tasting notes: The wine is bright red in color, with a reddish meniscus. It is fine, elegant, floral and fruity. The very discreet and well-integrated wood contributes to its complexity and aromatic enrichment. Balanced and full of aromatic notes reminiscent of ripe red fruits. It has a lively but balanced acidity, soft tannins and a very long and pleasant finish.

Varieties: Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão and Tinta Roriz

Winemaker: Paulo Ruão

The 2016 Tinto Vinha do Sobreiro is mostly a Touriga Franca with Tinto Cão and Tinta Roriz dividing the last 20% of the blend, all aged for 12 months in new French oak. It comes in at 13.6% alcohol. This is from Cima Corgo vines with an average age of 30 to 40 years. Intensely flavorful and surprisingly concentrated in terms of fruit flavor, this beautifully balanced wine is bright and precise, focused and understated. This is a lovely debut vintage that might have a bit of upside potential, but it is also drinking great now. Of course, it already has a few years under its belt. I'm not sure there is any compelling reason to age it more, but we might be surprised. If it ages well, it might be entitled to an uptick in score.

Hillside vineyard, 400 meters above sea level, in Celeirós, mainly Touriga Franca, with 20% old vines. Very lively color for its age, quality barrels enveloping the fruit, then comes the elegant side, with a floral touch, in a much younger register than the label indicates. Great freshness in the mouth, fine acidity, tannins present but tamed, lots of balance in a super gastronomic wine.
