César Márquez El Rapolao 2022
César Márquez El Rapolao 2022
El Rapolao is in one of the coolest areas of the village, a site with several plots of land belonging to different winegrowers. It comes from a west-facing plot with a slight slope to the north. The aim of the wine is to represent the site, intervening as little as possible in it, working as was done in the past.
Vinification: The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with 15% stalks in 1,000kg containers. The grapes are gently crushed so that part of them remains whole during fermentation. This is carried out spontaneously by the yeasts themselves, without the addition of other yeasts. The maceration took place over 17 days, during which time the work consisted of sinking the cap a little each day with the hands, without breaking it. The wine was then bled and pressed and left to decant for 7 days. After this process, the wine was placed in 500-litre barrels for 12 months.
Tasting notes: Very juicy, sweet and with generous fruit. Round and very pleasant. Full-bodied and juicy, although with a leafy sensation at the back of the palate. Powerful and juicy finish. Jancis Robinson
Grape Varieties: 85% Mencia, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 5% white grapes and other varieties

Márquez's version of El Rapolao in 2021, the 2021 El Rapolao is from the coldest part of the village where the soils are rich in iron and organic matter, and it was micro-fermented by plot in small 1,000-liter vats with a maceration of 17 days and an élevage in used 500-liter oak barrels. It has 12.81% alcohol and nice balance with freshness and acidity coupled with fine tannins. It's super elegant, with lots of finesse, very harmonious, floral and perfumed. It has an austere mouthfeel and is nicely textured, with very fine, chalky tannins. It's more relaxed than previous vintages, when the wine felt tighter. 1,611 bottles were filled in December 2022.
