Viña Almaviva EPU 2022

Viña Almaviva EPU 2022 it is the second wine of the emblematic Viña Almaviva, the result of cooperation between the Rothschild family and Concha y Toro. It is a superb wine with a promising and long ageing potential. It is the living expression of the fabulous terroir of Puente Alto, the perfect harmony between complexity and tension.

Vinification: The must is first cooled, and the juice is left in contact with the skins to extract their rich colour and aromas, then warmed before the alcoholic fermentation and final maceration take place. The Malolactic Fermentation occurs spontaneously, immediately before or just after the wine is drained off by gravity into new French oak barrels. The skins and seeds are pushed into basket presses and lightly pressed to extract the press wine, which is added in small proportions to the final blend.

Tasting Notes: Deep, intense, and opaque ruby red. e nose shows an attractive, fresh, and layered bouquet of ripe cassis, wild strawberries, and blackberries, associated with hints of cedar and spices, fine notes of vanilla, walnut, liquorice, and cacao. Dense and generous, the wine fills the mouth with ripe, smooth, and refined tannins, leaving an overall impression of balance, elegance, and persistence. Produced from an extremely dry vintage, this well-structured wine of balanced acidity and harmonious texture.

Grape Varieties: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot

A rich and opulent style that drips with ripe berries, plum and cassis, with twinges of leather, fresh herbs and graphite dancing in and out. The plush finish lingers, offering spiced chocolate notes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032. 5,000 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Refined sweet tobacco, black olives and hints of paprika, cedar, iron and anchovy-like savoriness. Refined sweet berries on the palate with a lovely savoriness. Medium-bodied and restrained, plush and generous, with fine tannins and a lengthy finish. 84% cabernet sauvignon, 10% carmenere, 3% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Epu leads with a poised yet charmingly rustic nose of ripe red fruits flanked by herbaceous, leathery accents. The palate is concentrated and full-bodied, with an opulent, forward richness that transitions to a decedent, chocolate-tinged finish of rich tannins and a lingering herbal, menthol-laced conclusion. A well-made balance between style and place, this serves as a pleasurable and accessible introduction to the more poised, nuanced Almaviva. It's a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Carménère, 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged 12 months in 10% new French oak.

Cabernet dominant in character, majoring on cassis, fennel and blueberry, chocolate, cocoa bean, with velvety tannins. It's a lovely wine, with a kick of spice, but the drought of the season is more apparaent with Epu than with Almaviva, expect just a trace of heat on the opening. Rothschild & Concha Y Toro owners, 10% new oak for ageing. Michel Friou winemaker.
