Niepoort Charme Tinto 2024
Niepoort Charme Tinto 2024
Niepoort Charme Red 2024 is one of Dirk Niepoort’s most delicate and surprising interpretations of the Douro. In a winery founded in 1842, it occupies a special place: a rare red, almost Burgundian in inspiration, designed more for elegance, transparency and freshness than for brute force. 2024 began very favourably, with a wet winter replenishing water reserves after an extremely dry cycle. Spring was relatively hot and dry, followed by a typically hot summer. The harvest in Vale de Mendiz began in very hot conditions on 24 August and ended on 26 September, resulting in a Charme that is particularly precise, luminous and balanced.
Vinification: Whole bunches lightly crushed in granite wine presses, with a short but intense pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation begins in the press and ends in the barrel, followed by 15 months’ ageing in French oak barrels, in a process designed to preserve the finesse of the fruit and the silky texture that define the Charme.
Tasting Notes: A brilliant ruby colour and a very refined aromatic profile, with elegant fruit, subtle oak notes and a slightly reductive and rustic character that gives it its identity. On the palate, subtle yet firm, with a very well-balanced structure, soft tannins, marked freshness and a long, harmonious finish full of nuance. A distinctive, sophisticated and highly gastronomic Douro red.

The 2024 Charme started very closed in the glass. It's one of the first reds to be bottled—only this and the Turris from 2024 were bottled in February 2026—and it feels like a baby with all the puppy fat, peachy and juicy. It took a long time in the glass to open up; I also tasted a bottle that was open the day before, and the wine had not moved much. The giveaway is the elegant, silky and velvety palate, pretty much in line with the 2023. It's floral, herbal, perfumed, elegant, fine-boned and balanced. I think this is the finest Charme to date, together with the 2021. 12,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2026.
