Maçanita As Olgas Red 2023

Maçanita As Olgas Red 2023 comes from Carlão, in the Cima Corgo region, from an old vineyard planted in granite soils at an altitude of approximately 440 meters. In the Maçanita universe, this wine represents a less muscular and more subtle Douro: a “forgotten” plot, with a fresh and mineral profile, to show that there are many Douros within the Douro.

Vintage 2023

It was a dry year, with rain concentrated in the spring and hail damage in some areas, which helped reinforce the wine’s taut and luminous character.

Vinification

The philosophy maintains the estate’s artisanal approach: horse-drawn plowing, hand-harvesting into small crates, fermentation in a wine press, with some whole clusters, and aging in neutral French oak barrels. The goal is not to imprint the wine with wood, but to let the vineyard, the altitude, and the granite speak for themselves. Production is very limited.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, it is extremely captivating, with floral notes, fresh red fruit, and a very delicate balsamic quality. On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied, yet with great depth, texture, and precision, revealing energy, purity, and a rare elegance. The tannins are fine and persistent, and the finish is long, fresh, and full of character.

Grape Varieties

Field blend, with several varieties such as Alvarelhão, Donzelinho Tinto, Moreto, Mourisco, Tinta Carvalha, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Franca, among others.

The red 2023 As Olgas Tinto was produced with a field blend of 12 red varieties—Alvarelhão Ceitão, Casculho, Cornifesto, Donzelinho Tinto, Grand Noir, Moreto, Moscatel de Hamburgo, Mourisco, Tinta Aguiar, Tinta Carvalha, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca—from cooler old vines on granite soils at 440 meters in altitude. It fermented in lagar with some 30% full clusters and aged in neutral barrels. This was, by far, the most elegant, profound and complete red from 2023. It's floral and perfumed with an intoxicating and attractive nose, clean, with purity and precision. It has 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.67 and 5.5 grams of acidity. It's only light- to medium-bodied, but it has energy and light, with inner strength. 1,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024.
