Cortes do Reguengo 2020

Cortes do Reguengo Red 2020 is produced at Quinta do Reguengo, in the heart of the Upper Douro region, a project of the Cardoso family. This DOC Douro has become one of the great recent stories of Portuguese wine: in 2025, it scored 97 points and won the ‘Best in Show’ trophy at the Decanter World Wine Awards, entering the exclusive group of the 50 best wines in the world. 2020 was hot and dry, with low yields and very concentrated grapes, but here always balanced by cool nights and schist soils with granite outcrops. The result is an intense red wine, but surprisingly fresh and gastronomic, with plenty of room to evolve in the bottle.

Vinification: Manual harvest, with selection in the vineyard. The grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed, undergoing thermal shock up to 18ºC. This is followed by 36 to 48 hours of cold pre-fermentation maceration and fermentation in temperature-controlled truncated cone-shaped stainless steel vats. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, refining tannins and complexity.

Tasting Notes: Deep ruby colour. The nose is fresh, with notes of red and black fruits in elegant balance with the toasted wood. On the palate, it is fruity, full-bodied but polished, with soft, well-integrated tannins, balanced acidity and a long, persistent finish. A serious Douro Superior, perfect for meat, smoked meats, roasted fish and mature cheeses.

Grape Varieties: 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Tinta Roriz and 30% Touriga Franca

The grandeur of the Douro as a zone not just for Port but for table wines too is confirmed by two Best in Show reds this year, making a total of eight appearances over the last decade. Complex blends are often a feature of these wines, though this example is crafted from three classic varieties (40 per cent Touriga Nacional with 30 per cent each of Tinta Roriz and Touriga Francesa). It’s dark black-red in colour and densely aromatic: bramble and bilberry backed by cistus, thyme and lavender. It floods the mouth with textured black fruits, too, with the same complex aromatics that are evident on the nose. There’s an inner freshness which almost surprises given its ‘inland’ wealth, while it’s not hard to see it growing savoury with the years. For all that, there’s nothing forbidding here, despite its textural wealth, though it’s certainly a food wine.
