Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 2022
Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 2022
Tignanello 2022 is Marchesi Antinori's latest Supertoscano, a Tuscan IGT red produced exclusively in the Tignanello vineyard, in the heart of Chianti Classico, between the valleys of Greve and Pesa. Created in the 1970s, it was one of the first Sangiovese wines aged in barrels and one of the wines that inaugurated the category of great Tuscan IGTs. Today it is a global icon! 2022 was hot and dry until mid-August, with above-average temperatures offset by cool nights. Late summer rains and the drainage of the marl, limestone and schist soils allowed for perfect ripening, with very concentrated grapes but lively acidity.
Vinification: Each parcel is vinified separately in truncated cone-shaped vats, with delicate maceration and malolactic fermentation in barrels. The wine is aged for just over 13 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels, mostly new; first by batch, then in the final batch. This is followed by a year of rest in the bottle before release.
Tasting Notes: Intense ruby red colour with purple reflections. The nose impresses with ripe cherry and amarena, pomegranate seeds and delicate notes of violet, leading to balsamic touches, vanilla and spun sugar. On the palate, it is dense but fresh, with juicy tannins, depth of fruit and an elegant alternation between volume and acidity, ending in a long finish that echoes the notes of the aroma.
Grape Varieties: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Rich and fruit-forward, the Marchesi Antinori 2022 Tignanello very much respects the vintage that tends to deliver more concentration and volume overall. It delivers extra fruit weight with a velvety, satiny feel over a generous mouthfeel. Tignanello offers blackcurrant and cherry, but there is a mineral note that keeps things focused. This is a beautiful expression of the vintage, with excellent work done to execute soft tannins, texture and length.
There’s extraordinary energy in this wine. It displays a dark nose of black cherries, bramble fruit, violets, forest, licorice, bark, carob and leather. Density and tension dominate the full-bodied palate, with firm, velvety tannins. It’s slightly austere in the finish at the moment, yet it’s crunchy and full of potential. Try from 2026.
The 2022 Tignanello is such an elegant, poised wine. Brisk acids cut through a core of red Sangiovese fruit. Crushed flowers, mint, cinnamon, rose petal and a kiss of French oak appear later, adding notable brightness. The 2022 is a decidedly mid-weight Tignanello, but all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. Tignanello saw rain episodes at the end of the season, like most properties, but steep, well-draining hillsides were a clear advantage. The blend is 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, essentially the classic proportions here.
The rich texture wraps around plum, cherry, graphite, tobacco and earth flavors, with a line of dusty tannins underneath. Fresh, elegant and long, ending with a pleasant astringency. Give this a year or two to integrate. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
