Hugo Mendes Lisboa Castelão 2023
Hugo Mendes' Lisboa Castelão 2023 was created with the aim of showcasing the purity of this Lisbon grape variety, with an “old-fashioned” touch: smooth, fruity and faithful to the terroir. Alcohol content: 12.5%.
Vintage 2023: A year of freshness and clean fruit in the Lisbon region, favouring a light, fragrant and ready-to-drink profile.
Vinification: Total destemming, fermentation with natural yeasts in closed vats. Frequent pumping over to keep the cap wet, early pressing. The idea was to leave the wine soft and fruity, as in the old methods, in order to reveal the character of the grape variety.
Tasting notes (producer): This is a fresh wine, full of beautiful red fruit notes. It has a herbaceous touch that makes our mouths water. Serve it chilled, at 13ºC, if you want to bring out its freshness, or at 17ºC if you want to take advantage of all its aromatic components.

Mid purplish crimson, so bright it is almost luminous! Fragrant with small, wild, dark-red berries with a touch of something really tangy like cranberry but not as tart as that. Pure and scented with lovely, primary fruit but not sweet-smelling. Dry, chalky-textured and captivating. Like Pinot Noir but nothing like Pinot Noir! The tannins are completely different but it is already starting to show a real silkiness and there's long fragrant finish. Scented start to finish without being floral. A light touch but not a lightweight wine. A very pure approach to Castelão. (JH)
