Poeira 2021
Poeira 2021
Poeira 2021 is a Douro wine with a strong identity, created by Jorge Moreira at Quinta do Poeira, in Provesende, in the Pinhão Valley. The project arose from a desire to produce a wine that stands out within the Douro region: less reliant on body and extraction, and more focused on freshness, acidity and the vineyard’s natural elegance. The estate is situated on schist slopes, at an altitude of between 200 and 300 metres, with a north-facing aspect – a decisive factor in ensuring slower ripening and preserving tension and aromas in a hot climate. The 2021 vintage reinforces this profile of balance, revealing a serious, deep and very precise Douro, ideal for those seeking a Poeira Red with character, authenticity and ageing potential.
Vinification: Hand-harvested into 20 kg crates, followed by fermentation in a traditional wine press. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels, and ageing continues for 18 months in French oak barrels, imparting structure and complexity without detracting from the wine’s freshness.
Tasting notes: A complex and refined aroma, with black fruit, graphite, tobacco and violets, enveloped by a subtle balsamic note. On the palate, it reveals tension, precision and a silky texture, with fine tannins, elegant austerity and a long, fresh and persistent finish.
Grape varieties: Touriga Nacional and old vines with a blend of varieties.

I tasted again the 2021 Poeira, which now wears the subtitle "44 Barrica." It's a wine that felt very modern early on but feels like a quite classical Douro to me today. It was always a more elegant, less-extracted and less-oaked version of the reds from the valley, crafted from a field blend. It has notes of wild berries, herbs and flowers, with the resiny twist from the rockrose found everywhere in the countryside. This time, I found it more refined and with the perfume that made me fall in love with vintages like 2001. I'm updating the score and drinking window. It has moderate ripeness, 13.5% alcohol and good acidity and freshness, coming through as balanced, elegant and medium-bodied, with refined tannins. It's nicely built and balanced for the long haul. 13,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024.
Old vine Touriga Nacional. A very refined bouquet with notes of black fruit, graphite, tobacco, violets and a hint of balsamic. Firm, with great structure on the palate, a silky texture and fine, lively tannins; a certain austerity suits it very well. Precise and well-balanced, with a long finish.
