Penfolds Bin 169 Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is the most “contemporary” interpretation of Cabernet from the legendary Australian winery founded in 1844. Created in 2008 to complement the legendary Bin 707, it focuses exclusively on the cool terroir of Coonawarra, with its ferruginous soils over limestone, producing a deep, elegant red wine with great longevity. After not being produced in 2020, it returns in great form. The year 2021 was exceptional, with slow ripening, grapes of enormous concentration and balanced acidity.

Vinification: The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from selected Coonawarra vineyards are harvested separately and fermented by plot. The wine is then aged in fine-grained French oak barrels, mostly new, where it spends around 16–18 months gaining structure, creamy texture and perfect integration of the wood.

Tasting notes: Deep red colour. On the nose, intense notes of blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant, enveloped by hints of eucalyptus, graphite and spices. On the palate, full and very balanced: juicy red and black fruit, hints of blackberry tart with chocolate ganache, mocha and dried herbs (thyme, oregano), supported by very fine tannins, cocoa powder and a marked mineral note of iron/stone. Long, elegant and persistent finish, promising brilliant evolution until the mid-2040s.

Grape varieties: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

For the record, 2021 is exceptional across South Australia. Choosing the best wines is, at times, like pulling needles from a haystack. Crushed blackcurrants, a waft of sage, dried lavender and black olive paste are lathered across an impenetrably juicy finish that runs very long. A lick of Coonawarra menthol. Just a lick. This will age very well and I may be underscoring this today. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Perfumed up front, with notes of dried violet, white pepper, luscious cream soda and milk chocolate, plus aromatics of chai tea, tarragon, toasted cedar and green olive. The tannins are dense but fine-grained, and there's an epic finish where all the flavors fit together in harmony. Drink now through 2044. 50 cases imported.

So young that the aromatics are still hidden, silky, dark bitter chocolate, cassis, crushed mint and graphite. Thoroughly delicious, this has so much potential, a total knock out, delivering a slow build and slow construction through the palate. There was no Bin 707 or 169 in 2020 because of wildfires, so this is the first in two years. 100% French oak, 51% new. Tasted in Paris and Bordeaux in the same week. Delicious both times. Peter Gago winemaker.

The 2021 Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is the premium Cabernet in the range that matured in French oak (16 months, 51% new) and (70% American oak), and as a result, perhaps unsurprisingly, it is the more elegant wine of the pair on release. You get leafy cassis, raspberry, red apple skins, ferrous notes, pomegranate molasses, tobacco and some bay leaf—very pleasing. An intensely powerful wine, it's robust in its way but lithe too. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

There’s something disconcertingly rhubarb-like about the fruit here. Quite a contrast to the energy and freshness of the RWT Shiraz. It’s just not speaking to me, I’m afraid. Big and bold but hard work on the end.

With presence and poise in spades, this classically styled and refined 2021 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon offers seamless aromas of cassis, graphite and dried herbs featuring beautifully integrated oak. Tightly framed cedar flavors are currently prominent against a backdrop of sinewy tannins that drive a lengthy finish. This is a very serious Cabernet showcasing this classy Coonawarra vintage.
