Joseph Drouhin Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013
Joseph Drouhin Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013
Joseph Drouhin Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 is a cult red wine from the Côte de Nuits, coming from the Charmes climat in Gevrey-Chambertin, located just below Chambertin and next to Griotte-Chambertin, on shallow limestone soils with rocky outcrops. The Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in Beaune in 1880 and now in its fourth generation, is a benchmark in organic viticulture and a very pure vision of the terroirs of Burgundy.
Vinification
The Pinot Noir grapes are harvested by hand, with part of the bunches kept whole (c. 20–50%). Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in small open vats for 2–3 weeks; in 2013, maceration lasted around 20 days, with a small batch fermented in 500-litre barrels. This is followed by ageing for around 14–18 months in French oak barrels, around 20–30% of which are new, to polish the structure without masking the character of the terroir.
Tasting notes
Deep, brilliant ruby colour. The aroma is generous and seductive, with black and red cherry, wild berries, notes of fine wood, delicate spices, hints of musk and sous-bois. On the palate, it is full but harmonious, with opulent fruit without excess, very fine, almost powdery tannins, great elegance and a lively acidity that prolongs a long and vibrant finish – a Grand Cru made for ageing.

Mid crimson. Scented and heady. Super charming. On the nose it’s almost Oregonian! But on the palate there is Burgundian structure. Still a clear framework and ambition; this is not a slack Charmes. Well done for espousing grand cru quality. Needs food if you want to drink it now. But just about ready. (JR)
