Valtuille Cepas Centenárias 2023

Valtuille Cepas Centenárias 2023 is one of the most exclusive selections from Bodega Castro Ventosa, located in Valtuille de Abajo. It is a red wine from vines that are over 100 years old, centenary vines that strive to express the terroir in its purest form, under the direction of winemaker Raúl Pérez. The year 2023 represents a particularly carefully tended and limited harvest, a single plot selection, produced in very low quantities, which gives it the character of a cult wine.

Vinification: Manual harvest with careful selection of the bunches. The grapes ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in wooden foudres, with some of the stems included. Maceration is long and gentle, followed by 12 months of ageing in used French oak barrels. It is bottled without filtration, maintaining the purity of the terroir and the authentic character of the old vines.

Tasting Notes: Elegant aromas of lavender and cherry, with a delicate and precise expression, evolving into subtle nuances of peach. On the palate, it shows medium body, compact structure and firm but refined tannins, combined with a vibrant acidity that gives it freshness and energy. Although still young and seemingly simple, it already reveals a promising balance and a vibrant profile, and should evolve beautifully in the bottle over the coming years.

Grape Varieties: 85% Mencía, 8% Alicante Bouschet, 2% Bastardo and 5% white grapes and other varieties

More restrained on the nose, with elderberry, dried flowers, herbal tones, and an earthy, tile-like note. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with firm yet fine-grained tannins. Focused and chiseled, it shows structure and seriousness, yet carries a candid, pleasant undertone. This comes from a sandy clay soil in Mata los Pardos. This is fermented with partial whole cluster. Drink now or hold.

The old-vine cuvée 2023 Valtuille Cepas Centenarias was their first grand vin in 1999, but in the last few years, it has been produced with the field blend found in a single plot in Mata Los Pardos, which has up to 5% Trousseau, on clay and sandy soils. It fermented with 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in an oak vat with a 45-day maceration and matured in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels for 12 months. It has more ripeness than other 2023s, 13.16% alcohol, and balanced acidity, but this is a very complete wine, combining power and elegance. It has depth and complexity and is one of the most serious wines from the vintage, also very clean. 4,100 bottles and 36 magnums were produced. It was bottled in May 2025.

The 2023 Valtuille Cepas Centenarias is 100% Mencía from Valtuille. It opens with lavender and cherry aromas in a delicate, precise expression, later revealing a subtle peach nuance. Medium-bodied and compact, this carries gripping tannins and vibrant flavor. Seemingly simple now, it should evolve beautifully in bottle. I tasted the 2023 just two months after bottling.

This wine unfolds with vibrant aromas of violet, lavender, and talc, layered over intense red cherry fruit. On the palate, silky tannins wrap around notes of blueberry and a subtle touch of licorice, creating a fluid and elegant texture. Fermented with 30% whole bunch in foudres and aged in used 500L barrels, the wine offers wonderful structure and just enough tannic grip in support. 2025-2030
