Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2021
Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2021
Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2021 is a highly prestigious red wine, sourced from vineyards planted on gravel soils typical of the region. The cooler and more challenging year of 2021 resulted in a wine with an elegant and precise profile, less opulent than previous vintages, but with an excellent balance between fruit, acidity and minerality. Ideal with red meats, game and mature cheeses.
Vinification: Whole grapes are fermented at 28°C in small wooden vats with very soft extraction by manual punching down. Ageing: 18 months in barrels (60% are new barrels produced in our in-house cooperage), with aging on lees. After being racked a single time, wine is aged according to its profile.
Tasting Notes: A very open nose of fresh red fruits, raspberry, strawberry, and black fruits, blackberries, blackcurrant. Hints of sweet spices, liquorice, tobacco leaf. Complex and fresh. On the palate, it is well balanced with a good freshness and great deal of vivacity. Good concentration with a nice et soft texture, offers a perfect harmony! Very lively, it is full of energy and delivers a great length. Nice complexity of flavors ranging from fresh fruits to spices, cigar box and hint of smoky minerality, faithful to the terroir of Graves. A great and complexe wine between harmony and smoothness.
Grape Varieties: 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot

Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Intense concentration – an attempt to cover up for the vintage’s shortcomings? Rather dry and pinched on the end.
This is extremely perfumed, with violets, lavender, forest fruit and beeswax. Medium- to full-bodied with creamy, round tannins. It’s delicious already with a lovely balance, showing dark fruit, meat and chocolate with a hint of smoke. Straight and driven, it has a long finish for the vintage. 63% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but even better in a year or two.
Barrel Sample. Fresh, crisp but with intensity and ripe texture, this wine is the star of the white wines this vintage. It is tight, with minerality and acidity. Pink grapefruit, and a dynamic texture reveal its concentration. It will be a great wine from a great white wine vintage.
Provides a step up in substance, with steeped red and black currant fruit laced with tobacco, bay leaf and worn leather accents. Features flashes of warm earth and iron that underscore the finish, also showing depth and grip. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2035. 10,000 cases made, 2,400 cases imported.
The 2021 Smith Haut Lafitte, a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot reveals a deep, complex bouquet of dark berries, spices, licorice, pencil lead and flowers intertwined with hints of menthol. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's suave and concentrated, with velvety, elegant tannins and a refined, penetrating finish.
Inky ruby in colour, with vivid reflections, this successfully walks the line of the vintage, delivering quality and a sense of drama, campfire smoke, crushed rocks, sage, cassis, bilberry, blueberry and damson fruits. Silky tannins, stands out for its quality, one to look out for, and will age to at least 15 year, but deliver pleasure far earlier. Harvest September 22 to October 14. 60% new oak (for a little less time than usual). 23hl/h yield.
