Produttori del Barbaresco "Barbaresco docg" 2021, N7 Wine Spectator 2025

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2021 is the “classic” wine from the legendary cooperative founded in 1958 and now comprising 54 winegrowers, heir to the first cooperative winery created by Domizio Cavazza in 1894. The grapes come from about 120 hectares in the heart of Barbaresco, on hills with clay-limestone soils with veins of sand. In 2025, this 2021 was ranked No. 7 in Wine Spectator's Top 100.

Vintage 2021

The 2021 harvest in Langhe is described as a year of medium body, ripe red fruit, spicy notes and very balanced tannins, with an ageing potential of around 20 years after harvest.

Vinification

100% Nebbiolo wine, from various plots with south, west and east exposures. Fermented in stainless steel at 28 ºC, with 28 days of contact with the skins and pumping over twice a day; malolactic fermentation is complete. This is followed by 20 months in large 50 hl oak barrels, with bottling in March 2024 and a production of around 320,000 bottles

Tasting notes

In the glass, it displays a bright ruby/garnet colour. The aroma combines cherry and raspberry with notes of pepper, sweet spices, black tea and dried flowers (rose, violet). On the palate, it is a classic Barbaresco: medium to full-bodied, with juicy red fruit, lively acidity, firm but fine tannins and a long, earthy and slightly salty finish. An authentic Piedmontese red for truffles, egg pasta and white or red meats.

Grape varieties: 100% Nebbiolo

This wine gives us our first taste of the epic 2021 vintage from a producer as prolific as Produttori del Barbaresco. Bottled in April 2024, this vintage shows the immense power and complexity that likens it to 2016, another year for collectors. The 2021 Barbaresco offers medium-rich density that is transmitted both to the wine's appearance and its mouthfeel. There is black fruit, spice and a touch of nutmeg. However, the wine maintains its youthful tension and energy throughout. The tannins are chalky, fine and void of any bitterness. This is a classical expression of Nebbiolo that gives us good reason to be excited for the upcoming 2021 Barbaresco Riservas.

A vibrant, well-defined red, offering rose, cherry, strawberry, white pepper and mineral flavors. Sleek and elegant, this firms up on the linear finish. Balanced and approachable now yet would benefit from a bit more time to knit together. Excellent length. Best from 2027 through 2040. 7,000 cases imported.—Bruce Sanderson

An intriguing wine with aromas of potpourri, dried cherries and candied orange zest. Smoky and juicy on the palate, with firm, dusty yet ripe tannins, a full body and a long, savory finish. Drinkable now, but it has great potential for the long haul.

Barbaresco. Lustrous, just mid ruby. Savoury, minerally nose with rich but shy red fruit underneath. Lush, fresh raspberry fruit underpinned by bags of polished tannins. Long and a little muscular but with plenty of fruit to balance. (WS)
