Quinta do Mouro Rótulo Dourado

Rótulo Dourado 2020 is Quinta do Mouro's (Estremoz) top wine, a classic Alentejo red made for ageing: austere, fresh, gastronomic and limited in production.

Vintage: A hot, dry year in most of the Alentejo, but here the profile remains balanced: 14% vol., pH 3.45 and 5.9 g/L total acidity, promising a long life in the bottle.

Vinification — Blend of Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira. Part of the grapes were destemmed; trodden by foot in a wine press for 3 days, fermentation completed in vats. Aged for 18 months in new Portuguese oak; minimum 3 years in the bottle before release. 4,800 bottles.

Tasting notes (producer) Deep purple colour; ripe red and black fruit, subtle spices, slight wild notes and vegetal freshness. Concentrated on the palate, with structure and volume, velvety texture, very well-balanced tannins and acidity, integrated wood, long and fresh finish.

Grape Varieties 40% Alicante Bouschet, 25% Aragonez, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Touriga Nacional, 10% Trincadeira.

The 2020 Gold Label or "rótulo dourado" is their top red for the long haul, a blend of 40% Alicante Bouschet, 25% Aragonez, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Touriga Nacional and 10% Trincadeira Preta. It fermented partly destemmed, and the grapes were foot trodden in lagar for three days and then finished fermenting in tank. The wine matured in a selection of their best new Portuguese oak barrels for 18 months and spent at least three years in bottle before it was released. It feels young and undeveloped, ripe, serious, concentrated and generously oaked, with no concessions to modernity. It has lovely rusticity and character and keeps the balance and poise. It comes in at 14% alcohol, denoting good ripeness but without excess, balanced by a pH of 3.45 and 5.9 grams of acidity. This should be long lived, and even if you can pull the cork anytime, there's no rush. 4,800 bottles produced.
