Quinta do Vallado Vinha da Coroa 2021
Quinta do Vallado Vinha da Coroa 2021
Quinta do Vallado Vinha da Coroa 2021 is a red wine from the Douro region. It originates from the vineyard where it is produced - Vinha da Coroa, which is located on top of a hill forming a crown of old vines. This vineyard was planted in 1958, with northern exposure, and has a blend of 20 grape varieties, predominantly Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Baga. The soil is mainly schist. It is particularly versatile in pairing.
Vinification: After careful manual selection on the sorting table, the grapes are partially (50%) crushed and destemmed. The remaining grapes are sent whole to the vat. Fermentation lasts 14 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, during which there is very little extraction, promoting carbonic maceration in the whole berries. This wine aged for 24 months in 225-litre French oak barrels of 2nd and 3rd year.
Tasting Notes: Aroma: Red fruits, forest, with a hint of toast from the barrel where it aged. Taste: A very elegant, fresh and spicy wine, with a very long finish with red fruit flavours. It is complemented by a pleasant vegetal touch and excellent tannins.
Grape Varieties: 50% Tinta Roriz, 19% Tinta Barroca, 13% Touriga Franca, 5% Touriga Nacional, 3% Baga, among others
Winemaker: Francisco Olazabal and Francisco Ferreira

The fruit is from a vineyard planted in 1958 with at least 34 native low-yield varieties. This field blend has a dense black-coffee aroma and concentrated black fruit. It is young and worth cellaring. Drink from 2027.
Old vineyard where Tinta Roriz dominates. Aged only in used wood. Not very concentrated in colour, very lively and fresh with red fruit notes of cherries and plums. Very fine tannins on the palate, the wine has an excellent overall profile, a beautiful example of an old vine red wine.
The more elegant and fresher 2021 Vinha da Coroa comes from a high-altitude, north-facing plot that was planted with a complex field blend of 20 varieties dominated by Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo, around 50%) and is one of the two old vineyards in the higher part of the Quinta at 300 to 350 meters above sea level that was planted in 1958; the other one is Vinha da Granja. The vineyard is organic, and the wine will be certified from the next vintage. It fermented in stainless steel with 50% whole clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in used 225-liter French oak barrels for 24 months. This is paler and more elegant, with a mixture of berries and herbs and a spicy twist. They reduced the extraction in the last four or five years. It could very well be the most elegant of the reds from Vallado. The alcohol is a moderate 13%. They used some full clusters in the fermentation, and they tried to control the extraction of tannins from the Tempranillo ... And they succeeded! 6,062 bottles and 200 magnums produced. It was bottled in August 2023.
