Niepoort Robustus 2019

Niepoort Robustus 2019 is made from the oldest north-facing vines, where acidity and tannic structure are particularly pronounced. In such a hot region, it is thanks to the diversity of the terroirs and the character of the old vines that we are able to produce fresh wines with great ageing potential. The name Robustus is a tribute to the first Douro wine produced by Dirk Niepoort, which was never released. Since 2004, it has been produced using traditional winemaking methods.

Vinification: Upon reaching the cellar, the grapes were hand-sorted and gravity-fed into stainless steel tanks. A long alcoholic fermentation and maceration period followed. The wine matured in 2000L barrels for 4 years before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes: It offers an exquisite bouquet that captivates the senses. Delicate floral notes intertwine perfectly with dark fruits, creating an attractive nose. Fresh herbs add a lively touch, while subtle hints of graphite provide a mineral touch. The presence of vanilla bean lends a gentle sweetness, complemented by a variety of complex spices. On the palate, it is structured and complex, showing its seriousness. Spicy tones enhance the depth of flavour, leading to a long, round finish that lingers gracefully, leaving a lasting impression.

Grape Varieties: Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão and others

Drink now or hold.

They just bottled the 2019 Robustus (January 2024), a wine that will change in 2021 as they stopped using Vinha do Carril for it that year. The different old vineyards (80+ years old) all from the Tedo Valley fermented in lagar with foot trodden full clusters and matured in large oak vats (2,000-liter) for five years with the idea to get rid of the primary character and develop more complex aromas, wet earth, forest floor, truffles and mushrooms. The palate is very savory, umami, salty with a meat broth character. There's a lot more nuance, complexity and depth here. It has to be the finest Robustus to date, more elegant than the earlier vintages, polished, clean and precise. This should age effortlessly for a very long time. 3,000 bottles produced.
