Nicolas Catena Zapata 2021

Nicolas Catena Zapata 2021 is the fruit of a harvest full of freshness, finesse and precision. The 2021 vintage is a true ode to precision winemaking and the region's terroir. This wine, one of Argentina's icons, bears the signature of the Catena family, synonymous with excellence in South American oenology. The blend, traditionally dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, finds additional refinement in Malbec and Cabernet Franc, guaranteeing layers of fruit and enviable longevity. Although stunning when young, this wine requires patience: a decade in the cellar will reveal its fullness. For pairing, noble cuts or roast lamb bring out its complexity.

Vinification: Harvesting is done by hand. Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks and also in French oak barrels, with indigenous yeasts to preserve the identity of the terroir. The process is carefully controlled to allow for a balanced extraction of tannins, colour and aromas. Ageing: 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: Darkest crimson with purple rim. Darker-fruited than the above. More rocky than stony. Compact tannins are still young but already refined. Chewy framework, round, pure fruit. Jancis Robinson

Grape Varieties: 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Franc

Tangy herbs, licorice and graphite with ripe black cherries and a hint of coffee. Tense and juicy on the palate with bright acidity and a medium to full body. Long, super well-poised and extensive. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Nicolás Catena Zapata was produced with a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Franc from Nicasia and Adrianna vineyards. It fermented in small oak barrels, concrete and stainless steel tanks and matured in 2,000-liter oak foudres for 18 months. It's a powerful but fresh red with 13.7% alcohol and mellow acidity, perhaps because the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked earlier (and with lower yields) and they discarded the clay soils and went more for stony plots. The wine feels more streamlined and elegant. 2021 is a cool and very good year, following the path of the 2019, and the wine shows the classical herbal and spicy character of the Bordeaux varieties with pungent notes of black peppercorns and is spicier because of the high Cabernet Franc content. 64,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2022.

The fruit is sourced from vineyards in the Uco Valley and Maipú, resulting in a fruit-focused, silky Malbec. Delicate aromas of berries and spices introduce a fresh palate of strawberry, cherry and mulberry flavors enhanced by a dash of pink pepper. This vintage is lively and juicy, with a lengthy and delicious finish. Drink now or hold through 2038 and beyond.

A cool vintage, although not as much as 2016, with precision and nuance, floral aromatics, raspberry leaf, black cherry and brambled hedgerow fruit, with tobacco and chamomile flowers, smoky and intense. This vintage sees a new label for the first time since this wine was first released back in 1997, pointing to what makes it so different from many Argentinian Cab-Malbec blends (ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines, whole cluster vinification, massal selection programme leading to the diversity of their DNA). 50% new oak for ageing. Alejandro Vigil winemaker. Tasted twice.
