Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux 2008
Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux 2008
Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux 2008 is a sophisticated and rare white wine produced by the prestigious Chateau Margaux, one of the most renowned producers in Bordeaux, France. It is made exclusively from the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety, grown in a very restricted area of the estate, which contributes to its exclusivity and exceptional quality. The 2008 harvest was marked by challenging weather, but in the end resulted in fresh and elegant white wines. It can be drunk young, emphasising its freshness, but it also has ageing potential, allowing it to evolve in the bottle for more than a decade.
Vinification: Fermentation in French oak barrels. Ageing: 6 to 8 months in oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: Pavillon Blanc 2008 is the demonstration of how Sauvignon Blanc can achieve, in privileged terroirs, a perfect balance between power and finesse, richness and delicacy. It is delicious to drink today and should remain so for several more years.
Grape Varieties: 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Compared to 2006 and 2007, the 2008 dry white wines of Bordeaux are inferior, but that does not mean they are not very good. They do not possess the flesh, power, or richness of the 2006 and 2007, but they reveal precise, intensely aromatic personalities, lighter bodies, and more noticeable acidity. These remain among the world’s most underrated world-class dry white wines. I will provide full tasting notes once they are in bottle, but following are the dry whites I tasted along with their approximate scores.
Barrel sample. Fresh and soft, just hinting at toast, ripe yellow fruits, only lightly touched by citrus. It is pure, vivid, but warm.
Lemon, light lime peel and mineral aromas. Medium-bodied, with lovely honey, celery and grass on the finish. More subtle and fine than the 2007.
Pale greenish gold. Lots of acidity and more minerals than usual but with passion fruit too. Very firm and tight. Chalky finish. Bracing. Not as potent as some other recent vintages.
