Textura Vinha Negrosa Red 2018

Textura Vinha Negrosa Red 2018 is produced in Serra da Estrela. Composed of Jaen and Alfrocheiro, which are the grape varieties that best demonstrate and mirror the terroir where this vineyard is located. The main characteristics are the altitude - 470 to 500 metres, the composition of the soil - granite and granite sand, and the age of the vines - around 30 years. The 2018 red wines tend to be more rustic in character and have a high potential for ageing in the bottle.

Vinification: Separate fermentations due to different ripening stages between these two grape varieties. 40% whole bunch and maceration of at least 15 days. Ageing in French oak barrels for 16 months.

Tasting Notes: Aromas with a fruity, sour cherry character and some spicy notes, mainly due to the ageing in wood. Elegant on the palate with a high sensation of freshness and great complexity and concentration. It has enormous potential for bottle ageing.

Grape Varieties: Jaen (50%) and Alfrocheiro (50%)

Winemakers: Luís Seabra and Mariana Salvador

The 2018 Vinha Negrosa has a stronger note of smoke, spice and toast, as it matured in 225-liter oak barrels for 18 months. That seems to have compressed the wine a little more, and it didn't feel as ethereal as the 2019 I tasted next to it that had aged in foudre instead. This feels a little more mainstream, and the wine reflects a warmer and riper year, with 13% alcohol and mellow acidity. 1,752 bottles were filled in April 2020.

Deep saturated crimson. Dark, ripe and dried fruits, the aroma quite marked by the sweetness and sweet spice of the oak, seems quite evolved. Much more traditional style of Dão, riper fruit flavours, firmer tannins but still with enough freshness to balance. I am not sure how/when they choose to release the wines because the 2019, which I tasted in 2022, was much fresher. This seems more old-fashioned Dão. Firm, chewy, dry and marked by the dried-fruit flavours (but not at all raisiny).

This shows some ripe aromas reminiscent of prunes with coarse grass and hints of espresso. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with fruit-forward character, a juicy profile and polished tannins. One of the warmer wines in the portfolio. Drink now.
