Textura da estrela Red 2020
Textura da estrela Red 2020
Textura da estrela Tinto 2020 is made up of vines between 25 and 60 years old. They grow on granite soils and produce no more than 4.5 tonnes per hectare. Vila Nova de Tazem (sub-region of Serra da Estrela) is the terroir where the ‘Textura da Estrela’ labels come from. This is a low-intervention red wine in which we do short pumping overs in the first few days of fermentation and then just manual blanket management. The result is a very typical Dão that reflects its genuine terroir and sense of place.
Vinification: Fermented naturally in a wooden vat with 30% whole bunch followed by 30 days of cuvaison. Aged in vats and used French oak barrels for 15 months. Naturally stabilised.
Tasting Notes: Very refined red wine with great freshness. It has a mineral and earthy character, slight pepper and some red fruit. On the palate it is very faithful to its woodland aromas, with resinous notes accompanying the fresh red fruit, velvety and textured tannins, very fine and slightly spicy from the stems. Gastronomic and with a long, dry finish. Aged for an even more elegant profile.
Grape Varieties: Jaen (40%), Touriga Nacional (30%) and Alfrocheiro (30%)

More deeply coloured than the 2021 and smells darker-fruited and more spicy but still tangy and vibrant. Altogether a bigger and more tannic wine but the tannins are so fine they are like many layers of paper and giving a deliciously dry finish. Not as juicy but longer, more compact, and needing more time.
Out of the three vintages I tasted, the 2020 Textura da Estrela Tinto has a sensation of higher ripeness and a rounder palate despite the analytics being similar: moderate alcohol and mellow acidity. But the wine is quite solid and seamless, balanced and approachable, with some dusty tannins—very apt for the table. 9,490 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.
