Demencia Vino de Villa 2019
Demencia Vino de Villa 2019
Demencia 2019 is considered the Vino de Villa, as all the grapes come from the vineyards in Villafranca del Bierzo, thus reflecting the unique terroir of this region. Old, poor, cup-formed vines with a minimum age of 80 years are used. It is only bottled in the best vintages. Ideal with roast meats, lamb or mature cheeses.
Vinification: Fermented in 1500-liter stainless steel tanks, indigenous yeasts; maceration during 48 hours prior to fermentation; alcoholic fermentation during 12 days, punching the cap manually to favor the extraction of polyphenols and aromas. Drawing off by gravity without pressing.
Tasting notes: Intense ruby colour with violet reflections, typical of the Mencía variety, indicating youth and vitality. On the nose, aromas of red fruit, herbs and floral notes stand out. It's a well-balanced wine with good acidity and fine, silky tannins.

The wine sold traditionally as Demencia is now a village wine, or vino de villa, from Villafranca del Bierzo, as all of the grapes for the 2019 Demencia Villafranca del Bierzo come from vineyards in that village. I tasted it next to the 2020, and both wines reflect the conditions of the year, a cooler and fresher 2019 with a combination of floral and elegant aromas with the elegant rusticity of the earthy touch that seems to be the house style. It has 13.89% alcohol, with good ripeness without excess and balancing acidity. 1,168 bottles were filled in June 2022.
Tasted blind. Chalky and delicate tannins accompanied by generous black fruit. Hints of provençal herbs. Well built, firm and well balanced. Bramble berries and pepper stand out later on. A touch of soft, well-integrated toasted wood. Long, fine profile. Demencia shows a much more delicate side here than it has in past vintages.
