Os Paulistas 2019
The Paulistas, Chão dos Eremitas, 2019
Os Paulistas 2019 is already one of the Icons of the Alentejo. This is its second edition, and it is still the Alentejo wine with the highest scores for Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson, as well as featuring in the TOP 30 of the best Portuguese wines of 2022.
Vinification: Manual harvest at night, selected on a sorting table, 30% whole bunch from 70% destemmed, falling by gravity into the vat. Spontaneous fermentation and maceration for 25 to 40 days, followed by ageing for 18 months in French oak barrels.
Producer's tasting notes: ruby colour with some violet touches, medium concentration. On the nose, lots of red forest fruit, some undergrowth. Fresh attack, good fruit with hints of pomegranate. Very fine, long and structured.
Varietals: Tinta Carvalha, Castelão, Moreto, Alfrocheiro and Trincadeira.
Winemakers: António Maçanita and Sandra Sárria

The 2019 Paulistas Vinhas Velhas Chão dos Eremitas is a blend of Tinta Carvalha (35%), Castelão (30%), Moreto (15%), Alfrocheiro (10%) and Trincadeira (10%), all aged for 18 months in well-used French oak (third use or more). Its strength is 14% alcohol. Tinta Carvalha and Castelão are partially (30%) fermented in whole bunches. Could this be the best of the reds in this report? Perhaps, although some of its siblings are strong contenders in this brilliant line-up. This has the combination of power, complexity, texture and depth. Hold your own or win on all fronts. It should age well and develop consistently. There are touches of plums, strawberries and herbs and a hint of something like Alicante (there isn't any, though). The finesse of the mid-palate is exquisite, with a silky texture on the finish. The blend creates something different and marvellous. This may well improve noticeably in the cellar. Let's start here and see how it ages over time. This is only the second vintage. It's already a home run with the capacity to improve. It makes me want to lean towards the moment, but it has some things to prove. Mark Squires; 29 Jun 2022
Deep crimson. Fragrance with berries and crushed rocks. Dry bone. The finest limestone tannins. Pure and complex at the same time. Delicate, elegant. The Alentejo equivalent of grand cru Burgundy. Impressive length and finesse. Extreme beauty. Julia Harding. 11/2022
Old vines with Tinta Carvalha, Castelão, Alfrocheiro Preto, Moreto and Trincadeira. Attractive aroma due to the freshness and purity of the fruit, reminiscent of wild strawberries, raspberries and pomegranates mixed with aromatic herbs. Striking elegance and extreme purity provide immediate pleasure, without compromising the structure and ageing potential based on the acidic pillar. Irresistible. Valeria Zeferino and Luis Ramos Lopes.
