Crosta Calcária dos Profetas 2024
History
Crosta Calcária dos Profetas 2024 is a rare white wine from Porto Santo, produced by the Companhia dos Profetas e dos Villões, with winemaking by António Maçanita and Jessica Lea Mesquita. It originates on one of the geologically oldest islands in the Atlantic, where fewer than 14 hectares of vineyards survive, planted close to the ground and sheltered from the wind by stone walls and cane structures. The name derives from the ‘crosta calcária’ (limestone crust), an area in the north of the island where compact limestone imparts a very pronounced, almost maritime minerality to the wines.
Vintage 2024
The 2024 vintage reinforces this wine’s cult status: a very limited production of just 912 numbered bottles, due to be released in March 2026. It was also the standout feature of Tim Atkin’s Portugal Special Report 2026, scoring 100/100 points.
Tasting Notes
Pale yellow colour. An intense, salty and mineral nose, with notes of gunpowder, iodine and seashells. On the palate, it is full-bodied, textured and very persistent, with the Atlantic and limestone character recurring in the finish. A unique white wine, perfect with scallops, clams, firm shellfish and fish with an intense flavour.
Grape varieties
Listrão and Caracol. Alcohol: 12% vol

A blend of rare Caracol and Listrão from one of Porto Santo’s few remaining vineyards, this is planted on ancient marine deposits that give the wine extraordinary tension and minerality.
Aged on lees until bottling without filtration, it is intensely saline and crystalline, with vibrant aromas of fresh lemon, citrus pith and sea spray.
The palate is electric and beautifully textured, with something akin to a fine, sandy texture.
A sublime Atlantic white that captures the island’s unique identity…truly astonishing. 2026-34
