F.X. Pichler Loibner Loibenberg Riesling 2024

F.X. Pichler Riesling Ried Loibenberg Bio 2024 comes from one of the Wachau’s most iconic vineyards. Ried Loibenberg, in Loiben, is a very steep, almost entirely south-facing slope, known for its dry stone walls, intense sun exposure and its ability to produce dense, deep Rieslings with great ageing potential. F.X. Pichler links this plot to the winery’s historical reputation dating back to the 1980s. The 2024 harvest was demanding in the Wachau, but produced very pure and precise wines. At Loibenberg, the result is a dry Riesling, very young yet already expressive, with great tension, well-defined fruit and a profile clearly designed to evolve in the bottle.

Vinification: It follows the winery’s traditional approach: hand-harvested and cellar work focused on preserving the terroir’s identity, without excessive intervention. In 2024, it is also produced organically, with 13% ABV, around 4 g/l of residual sugar and an unambiguously dry and elegant style.

Tasting notes: Straw-yellow with silvery highlights. Nose: it is still somewhat reserved, but already reveals grapefruit zest, white peach and a distinctly mineral character. Palate: it is complex, juicy and refined, with delicate stone fruit, fresh acidity, a precise texture and a long, elegant and persistent finish, where subtle hints of pineapple and stony salinity emerge. A great Austrian Riesling for serious dining and long-term cellaring.

Pale yellow green, silver reflections. Delicate nuances of grapefruit zest, white peach fruit, mineral, still somewhat reserved on the nose. Complex, juicy, fine stone fruit nuances, fresh acidity, subtle fruitiness on the finish, elegant and persistent, some pineapple in the aftertaste, good ageing potential.

The extremely intense oolong tea, nectarine and mango skin aromas pull you into this compact and juicy, medium-bodied wine. Quite some power, but the zesty acidity makes it feel a bit lighter than it really is. Some creaminess and a slew of black tea character in the very long, structured finish. Although this is showing well already, it will gain a lot through further bottle maturation. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold.
