F.X. Pichler Riesling Ried Kellerberg Organic 2024 comes from one of the most legendary vineyards in the Wachau. The Ried Kellerberg, in Dürnstein, is a steep, stony south/south-east-facing slope with a very distinctive microclimate: it receives early morning sun, but much of the plot is in shade from early afternoon onwards, which prolongs ripening and helps preserve precision and finesse. The 2024 vintage produced a Riesling of immense purity, already very expressive in its youth, yet clearly made to age in the bottle. It boasts 12.5% ABV, organic production and a dry, taut and elegant profile – one of those wines that combine concentration with lightness in an almost improbable way.

Vinification: True to the house style, this single-vineyard Wachau DAC is crafted to let the terroir speak for itself. F.X. Pichler’s approach prioritises clarity, texture and longevity, without excessive embellishment, reinforcing the aristocratic character that critics themselves associate with Kellerberg.

Tasting notes: On the nose, sliced apple, lemon, white grapefruit, blossom honey and thyme emerge. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, very mineral, fresh and precise, with white fruit, delicate peach and a long, taut and briny finish. A great Austrian Riesling, simultaneously refined and intense, perfect for seafood, fine fish or simply for the cellar.

Light yellow green, silver reflections. Floral, multi-faceted bouquet, a hint of vineyard peach, lemon balm, hints of yellow pineapple and passion fruit. Full-bodied on the palate, elegant, white peach, subtle fruit expression, mineral touch, lime zest on the finish, taut, lingers for a very long time, already accessible.

So much finesse and freshness to this, showing sliced apples, lemons, white grapefruit, wildflower honey and thyme on the nose, followed by a very stony, minerally, medium-bodied palate. It’s pristine and mouthwateringly fresh, walking a tightrope of concentration and lightness. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
