P+S Prats & Symington Chryseia 2006

P+S Prats & Symington Chryseia 2006 is one of the great reds of the modern Douro, born of the partnership between the Symington family and Bruno Prats, former owner of Château Cos d’Estournel. Created to prove that the Douro could produce dry reds of international calibre, Chryseia has become a benchmark for elegance, balance and longevity. The name comes from Greek and means ‘of gold’, in homage to the Douro. In 2006, the grapes came from Quinta da Vila Velha, Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta do Vesúvio, following a very rigorous selection process: only 16 per cent of the harvest was used for this wine, resulting in around 36,000 bottles. The year favoured early-ripening grape varieties, with beneficial rain in August and the harvest taking place between 15 and 25 September, resulting in a concentrated, fresh and well-structured wine.

Vinification: Aged for 10 months in new 400-litre French oak barrels, preserving the finesse of the fruit and rounding out the tannins of this powerful yet elegant Douro.

Tasting notes: Very intense, youthful colour. A nose of red fruits, with subtle oak. On the palate, it offers a fresh attack, pronounced tannins, good acidity and solid structure. A smooth finish with well-integrated tannins. A rich, full-bodied wine with great character.

Grape varieties: 60.5% Touriga Nacional and 39.5% Touriga Franca.

Deep crimson. Smells different from the 2004 and the 2009. Something unusual, a bit like tamarind at first or meat extract, though with aeration there's more spice and dark frut and vaguely floral. That same flavour on the palate. I find it more confusing than complex.

The latest vintage of the joint venture between Bruno Prats, formerly of Cos d’Estournel in Bordeaux, and the Symington family in the Douro is a rich, opulent wine, packed with intense, concentrated, sweet black fruits. Made in a Bordeaux style, it still manages to capture the heat and mineral character of great Douro wines.

This has a rich, spicy aroma, with intense flavors of red plum, spice and plenty of luscious creamy notes. The ripe, intense finish features chocolate-covered cherry and mocha notes.

Dark ruby-garnet colour, violet highlights, a delicate rim. Somewhat reserved at first, with notes of dark berry jam, heart cherries, subtle woody spice and hints of red fruit. Medium complexity, well-integrated tannins, ripe wild berry fruit, mineral notes, firm structure; will benefit from further bottle ageing. Elegant!
