Os Canivéis Red 2023

Os Canivéis Red 2023 is a small-batch Douro red that showcases the region’s most authentic and as yet largely unexplored side. It is produced in Carlão, in the Cima Corgo sub-region, from a collection of very old plots, with vines between 80 and 92 years old, planted at an altitude of around 520 metres and situated on soils that transition between schist and granite. Created by Joana and António Maçanita, this wine comes from a mixed vineyard with over 17 grape varieties, reflecting the Douro’s ancient diversity and a desire to celebrate terroirs which, though often underestimated, reveal immense character and longevity. The 2023 vintage produces a fresh, precise wine full of personality, with just 12.5% alcohol, reinforcing its natural elegance.

Vinification: Ploughing by horse, hand-harvested into 18 kg crates, partial destemming combined with whole bunches and maceration for 40 days. Ageing takes place for 18 months in neutral French oak barrels.

Tasting notes: A light, open ruby-violet colour, with notes of fresh fruit and dark chocolate. On the palate, it has a creamy attack, firm and long-lasting tannins, with an elegant, fresh and highly food-friendly profile.

Grape varieties: A mixed vineyard with over 17 grape varieties

The red 2023 Os Canivéis Tinto comes from a cooler place, classified as F for the production of Port, from a selection of small plots with soil that is in transition between schist and granite at 520 meters of altitude, planted with a field blend of Casculho, Cornifesto, Tinta Carvalha, Trincadeira Preta, Dozelinho Tinto, Tinta Aguiar, Mourisco, Alvarelhão, Aramón, Chancelar, Bastardo, Tinta Roriz, Mourisco de Semente, Moreto, Touriga Nacional, Malvasia Preta and Tinta Nevoeira. It fermented in lagar with 30% full clusters, foot trodden after five days of cold soak and with a maceration time of 35 days and matured in neutral barrels. This has a surprisingly pale color and a perfumed nose with hints of cool-climate wines, making me think of a red from Galicia. It has contained ripeness and 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.71 and 4.8 grams of acidity. It's fine-boned, elegant and ethereal, delicate and very tasty, with a fragile balance. 2,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024.
