Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 2023

Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 2023 is one of the leading white wines from Pessac-Léognan and one of the rare Grands Crus Classés de Graves in this category. The estate, situated in the heart of a forest south of Bordeaux, dates back to the 18th century and is now run by the Bernard family, who have raised its quality to a level of excellence. Renowned for its elegance, freshness and exceptional ageing potential, this white wine combines tradition and precision in a pure and sophisticated style. The 2023 vintage was marked by challenging conditions, but careful harvesting yielded grapes of great balance, resulting in a vibrant, aromatic and very precise wine.

Vinification: Vinification is carried out with extreme care, involving gentle pressing and fermentation in French oak barrels. Ageing on fine lees, with regular bâtonnage, contributes to the creamy texture and complexity, whilst maintaining freshness and aromatic purity.

Tasting notes: According to the producer, it has an expressive and elegant nose, with notes of citrus, grapefruit, white peach and floral nuances, accompanied by subtle smoky and mineral hints. On the palate, it is precise, fresh and enveloping, with vibrant acidity, a silky texture and a long, harmonious and persistent finish.

Grape varieties: 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon

Subtle but present oak in the spicy/mealy citrus aroma. Creamy texture helps fill out the palate, which is harmonious and shows more concentration than some Pessac 2023s. A harmonious whole with a nicely dry finish.

The 2023 Blanc from Domaine de Chevalier ranks among the finest white wines produced in Bordeaux this vintage. Revealing aromas of spices, flowers, anise and fresh licorice, with oak rendered all but imperceptible, it is concentrated and structured, offering terrific depth at the core, racy acids and a mineral, saline and perfumed finish. The élevage here has elevated the wine rather than obscured it. Kudos!

This lovely version shows a stylish set of chamomile, honeysuckle and jasmine notes draped over a core of yuzu, yellow apple and mirabelle plum, while warm brioche and salted butter accents lend a flattering edge to the suave finish. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2033. 2,100 cases made.

Pale yellow green, silver reflections. Fine yellow tropical fruit, notes of pineapple, guava and mango, a hint of meadow herbs, inviting, fine bouquet. Juicy, elegant, fine fruit expression, pleasant acidity, good length, certain ageing potential.

Ripe citrus, stone fruits, crushed stone, subtle toast, and spice nuances all emerge from the 2023 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc, a rich, medium to full-bodied white that has integrated acidity, concentration, and a great finish. Another brilliant white from this team, it's approachable now yet won't hit full maturity for at least 7-8 years and will have 20+ years of overall longevity. Drink 2031-2045.

This is layered and complex with an impressive mineral tension and depth. Medium- to full-bodied, very long and persistent. It has oyster shell, crushed stone and citrus peel character with racy acidity coming through, adding to its length and tension. Very long and firm at the end with a backbone of fine tannins for a white. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon.

Got to be the most consisent of all Pessac Léognan whites, sets out its stall immediately with fresh acidities and fennel spice, giving a kick and lift, classically nuanced and structured. White pear, sage, liqourice root, savoury as all hell, and so moriesh.

The white 2023 Domaine de Chevalier soars from the glass, after a swirl or two, with vivacious notes of white peaches, fresh pineapple, and juicy pears, leading to suggestions of coriander seed, honeysuckle, and candle wax. The medium-bodied palate is tight-knit and vibrant, with well-knit acidity and a long, chalky finish. The blend is 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon.

The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is one of the best dry whites of the year. Creamy and expansive, with terrific brightness, this exudes balance. Citrus confit, white pepper, mint, almond, pear and crushed rocks are some of the notes that build as the 2023 shows off its pedigree. I expect it will offer exceptional drinking for the next several decades. What else is new?
