Bodegas Contador 2015

Bodegas Contador 2015 is Benjamín Romeo's iconic wine from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja. The project began in 1995 and the first Contador harvest was in 1999. Since then, this red wine has become the ultimate expression of the winery, designed to be the purest interpretation of this Rioja terroir. 2015 was a hot, dry year in Rioja, with the risk of excessive wines, but here it resulted in a Contador of rare harmony: very concentrated and mature, yes, but also fresh, light and with an almost unexpected elegance for the vintage.

Vinification: The grapes were selected from vines over 60 years old. Fermentation took place in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, followed by 20 months of ageing in new French oak barrels. The wine was bottled in May 2017 and production was around 6,500 bottles, reinforcing its profile as a signature wine for ageing.

Tasting notes: The aroma reveals ripe black fruit, sandalwood, cedar and fine spices. On the palate, it is rich and powerful, yet very polished, with firm tannins, balanced acidity and notes of black fruit, liquorice, tobacco and dark chocolate. The finish is long, persistent and very precise, revealing why Contador is one of the great names in modern Rioja.

Grape varieties: 100% Tempranillo

The red flagship 2015 Contador was selected from vines over 60 years of age, and it fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in new French oak barrels for 20 months. It feels like a great vintage for the top bottling, as it has enough ripeness and concentration but is also terribly elegant, floral and nuanced. 2015 was a warm and dry year with the risk of excessive wines, but this Contador is beautifully balanced and has a rare combination of concentration and lightness. There is a nice core of freshness that lifts the wine up and gives it length. 6,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2017.
