Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino 1998
Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino 1998
Biondi-Santi Tenuta Greppo Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 1998 is the flagship wine of the house that created the first Brunello in history. At Tenuta Greppo, the Biondi Santi family has been producing red wines of rare elegance and legendary longevity for over 150 years, combining freshness, depth and an almost aristocratic personality. This year had a mild winter and rainy spring, followed by hot, dry July and August. September saw some rain, but then turned dry, allowing for a perfectly healthy harvest starting on 21 September and grapes with an excellent balance between ripeness and acidity.
Vinification: This Brunello ‘Annata’ is made exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso from 10-25-year-old vines planted in stony soils of various origins. Fermentation takes place in traditional cement vats, with long maceration, following the classic method of the house. The wine is then aged for 3 years in large Slavonian oak barrels and at least 4 months in the bottle before being released.
Tasting notes: Deep ruby colour evolving to garnet. The nose is complex and delicate, with dried rose, cherry compote, notes of dry earth, Mediterranean herbs and a touch of vanilla. On the palate, it shows great structure, but always harmonious: firm but polished tannins, lively acidity and a long, warm and very tasty finish, with notes of dried fruit and spices. A classic Brunello from Tenuta Greppo, made to age for decades.

These back vintages are available to purchase by special request. The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva comes from an under-the-radar vintage that has blossomed today. The aging potential of these Riservas from Il Greppo must be tasted to be believed. Driven by fresh acidity that remains firm and taut, this wine reveals a dark garnet color and mid-weight concentration. The bouquet presents a careful succession of dried berry, forest floor and spice aromas that builds in intensity as the wine warms in the glass. The wine hits the palate with immediate brilliance and sparkle. This bottle is at its drinking prime right now. It's a true beauty.
Features beautiful perfume, evoking rose, cherry, licorice and tobacco. Elegant, delicate even, with fine harmony and refinement. Cherry and raspberry flavors are persistent. Lacks the power of a 2001 or 1997, but shows finesse and filigree. Should come around sooner than the 1997. -- Biondi-Santi non-blind retrospective (July 2012). Best from 2018 through 2050. 867 cases made.
Lustrous mid ruby with narrow orange rim. Amazing focus and lift on the nose. Sour cherry with hints of iron and liquorice. Still so youthful and concentrated and at the same time so elegant. Succulent and long and with a layer of polished tannins carrying the fruit. Cool, sleek and long, this is a monument of elegance and style.
Just re-released, this supremely elegant complex red is a testament to Brunello's remarkable aging potential. It opens with aromas evoking sunbaked earth, underbrush, new leather and mature berry that mingle with whiffs of flint and tar. The silky palate is chock–full of flavor and finesse, boasting mature black cherry, raspberry compote, tobacco and black tea framed in polished tannins and still tangy acidity. Drink through 2035.
