Pagodes de Cos Red 2021

Pagodes de Cos 2021 is the second wine of Château Cos d'Estournel, Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux. An elegant and well-balanced red wine. It is reminiscent of life's simple pleasures. Pagodes de Cos is at once indulgent, comforting and lively, like a relaxed conversation with family or friends in a familiar place. Since its creation in 1994, it has always been produced from grapes grown in vineyards on the same clearly defined terroir; they are, on average, 40 years old. It shows the capacity to evolve with a few years of ageing.

Vinification: Hand-picked, with careful selection of the bunches. Grapes vinified by plot, in stainless steel vats with precise temperature control, in order to extract the smoothest tannins and preserve the fruity character. After fermentation and maceration, it is aged in French oak barrels, about 25% of which are new oak. Aged for 12 months.

Tasting Notes: Deep ruby colour, elegant aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, enveloped by subtle notes of cocoa, tobacco, spices and a slight smoky touch. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with firm but polished tannins, fresh acidity that enhances the purity of the fruit and a mineral character that lends liveliness, culminating in a persistent and balanced finish, confirming its suitability both for young consumption and for cellar ageing.

Grape Varieties: 60% Cabernet sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit verdot

Deep dark ruby red, opaque core, narrow rim with purple hues. Delicate aromas of figs, black cherries and a hint of plums; bouquet is clearly accented by Merlot. Juicy, fruit sweetness, ripe tannins, chocolate nuances, mineral-salty finish; a versatile food companion.

Enjoyable, powerful blueberry fruits, orange peel and lemongrass acidities, has pep and lift. More angular than in recent vintages, but maintains estate signature. 30% new oak, harvest September 23 to October 7.

Sleek and fresh, with a core of damson plum and red cherry notes that easily absorb the vintage's austere edge, letting savory and iris accents dart through prettily on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030. 12,000 cases made.

I like the currant, spice, white pepper and cedar aromas here that follow through to a medium body and pretty core of fruit with currants, tobacco, chocolate and cedar. 60% merlot, 36% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Needs two or three years to soften.

Aromatic blackberry fruits go along with black-spice scents. The wine's richness is lifted by great acidity to partner the blackberry flavors. Drink this structured second-label wine from 2026.

Tasted blind. Lots of minerals and cassis on the nose. Mouth-filling fruit but a tad severe. Lots of tannin. Very youthful but – just – not too austere.

The 2021 Les Pagodes de Cos is a strong effort, offering up aromas of cassis, charcoal, dark berries and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, sweet and fleshy palate that's quite rich and extracted, concluding with a saline finish. It's a blend of 60% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

Fragrant with soft spicing, vanilla, cedar, cinnamon, dark chocolate with bramble tones and blackcurrant leaf. Fruit feels well worked, I love the texture here - still quite straight and linear, all in one line, but with cool fruit nuances, svelte and sleek tannins and a lovely freshness. Also these spicy Cabernet markers too which are so appealing. Direct with chalky elements that are given lift by the quite present acidity, adding a vivacity to the overall flavour. Good complexity and broad structure. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend.
