Les Fort des Latour 2019

Les Forts de Latour takes its name from a historic parcel in the ‘Enclos’. The wine was first labelled with this name in 1966 and constant work to develop its quality has led it to reach the level of a Médoc Grand Cru Classé.

Vineyard: The origin of this wine comes from 3 places: 1) The boundary of Enclos 2) Some plots that could be used in the Grand Vin may finally be included in the Forts de Latour blend, depending on how their quality is assessed during the blending tastings. 3) Plots located outside the Enclos, in the Cru Classé areas of Pauillac:

Vinification: Les Forts de Latour is produced with the same meticulous care as Grand Vin, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The only notable difference, apart from the origin of the grapes, is the proportion of new barrels (50 to 60 per cent) used in the maturation phase. Maceration in stainless steel followed by ageing in barrels with racking every three months and fining with egg whites.

The Forts de Latour blend always contains a higher proportion of Merlot (25 to 30 per cent) than the Grand Vin.

Tasting Notes (James Suckling 2025): Exquisite aromas of lavender, cigar ash and Spanish cedar with dried citrus follow through to a medium body and a solid palate with powerful, ultra-fine, linear tannins. The muscle and long finish are very beautiful. Give it two or three years, but it's already a solid wine.

Varieties: 65.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31.9% Merlot, 2.3 Petit Verdot

Exquisite aromas of lavender, cigar ash and Spanish cedar with dried citrus follow through to a medium body and a solid palate with powerful, ultrafine and linear tannins. The muscle and long finish are so beautiful. Give it two or three years but already a solid wine. Drink after 2028.

A captivating nose of milk chocolate, cola, cherries, and violets, offering a soft and inviting bouquet. The palate is fully textured, opening gradually to coat the cheeks and tongue in a fine layer of chalky tannins. Juicy and succulent through the mid-palate, it bursts with citrus zest, orange and lemon pith, cranberries, and red cherries. There’s a beautiful interplay of bite and tension, with a sapdi freshness and a mineral core of crushed stones and iron. The finish ends bright, minty, and herbal, delivering great drive and persistence. 3.60pH.

The 2019 Les Forts de Latour appears to have tightened up a little since I last tasted it a few years ago. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet cassis fruit mingled with hints of cedar, iris, orange zest and new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated, with a ripe core of fruit underpinned by chalky structuring tannins. While it's approachable after a decant, it certainly merits additional patience. As readers will remember, this bottling mostly derives from dedicated parcels located further inland from Latour's famous "Enclos," next to Château Haut-Batailley.

Inky, great depths with a vivid violet rim, this is exceptional, balanced and full of character. Coming out of its serious early years, showing fleshy plum, damson and cassis fruits, along with graphite, slate, fennel and toast. If you like your wines particuarly powerful, you can go for it now and over the next few years, but it will age for a good few decades from here. Chiselled, very much speaking of its Pauillac heritage. 70% new oak for ageing, 39% of Latour's production in this vintage. Hélène Genin technical director, second year certified organic.

Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate brightening at the edge. Smoky and spicy, with fine nuances of exotic woods, a hint of black cherries, liquorice and juniper. Complex, blackberry fruit, fresh structure, integrated tannins, minerally, appears slimmer than expected, red cherries on the finish, salty and lemony in the aftertaste, already very drinkable.
