Casanova di Neri Cerretalto 2010
Casanova di Neri Cerretalto 2010
Casanova di Neri Cerretalto 2010 is made from Sangiovese and aged for at least two years in barriques and tonneau. The vineyard is located not far from Torrenieri, where the soil is red clay with a ferrous component that makes it unique to the area, therefore an authentic cru. This is a bold Brunello, intense ruby in colour, with a bouquet dominated by red and dark fruits, along with hints of spice and slightly smoky sensations. The palate is warm, rich but tense, with excellent acidity and salinity that will ensure its evolution over the coming decades. This wine came first in the list of the 50 best Italian wines during the 2016 Best Italian Wine Awards.
Vinification: Hand-picked. Fermentation and maceration: natural, using only gravity (no pumps) to place the grapes in the open cone-shaped fermenters with a drop system for 32 days. Aged in oak barrels for 30 months. Aged in bottle for 30 months.
Tasting notes: Very tannic and powerful, with lots of redcurrants, spices and notes of wood. Lots of mineral and stone character. Violets, too. Full-bodied, firm and structured. Very dense, but agile and bright. Goes on for minutes. Needs at least three or four years to soften. Try it in 2020. James Suckling

Here is a stunning wine that exudes excellence in primary material and winemaking craft. Man and nature come together with perfect precision and harmony in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto. The balance is exquisite. Bold cherry and blackberry notes are followed by crushed mineral, licorice, smoke and lightly fragrant cedar. The wine also shows convincing power and volume. It spreads evenly over the palate, and its flavor intensity can be counted over many long minutes. Cerretalto is beautifully concentrated and rich, but it is never too heavy or dense. This is an Italian icon that is still drinking young now, but it has an exciting world of possibility ahead. I think we'd all like to come along for the ride.
This is very tannic and powerful with loads of currants, spices and hints of wood. So much stone and mineral character to this. Violets, too. Full-bodied, tight and structured. Massively dense yet agile and bright. It goes on for minutes. Needs at least three or four years to soften. Try in 2020.
Clear, shining ruby with a fine garnet sheen. A perfect nose - smells of ripe, intense cherries, lots of blackberry. Plenty of rich ripe fruit but does not seem overripe at any moment, whilst in the background tobacco and cardamom add multilayered complexity. The approach again has plenty of ripe, vivid fruit - cherry and blackberry - then unfolds with fine-meshed, grippy tannin. Profound and salty with a very long finish, this wine is difficult not to swallow!
Effusive and fresh, this red shows black currant, cherry, strawberry, cedar and leather aromas and flavors. Rich and concentrated, turning more elegant with air. The oak becomes more integrated after a few hours and the long finish picks up elements of mineral and tobacco. Best from 2018 through 2033. 825 cases made, 125 cases imported.
