Barca-Velha 2015, Casa Ferreirinha
Barca-Velha is a wine renowned for its exceptional quality and limited releases, signed by Casa Ferreirinha and which has been acclaimed since its creation in 1952. With only 21 vintages, the 2015 Vintage has only 16,567 bottles, or just over half of the 2011 bottles.
Vintage: Luís Sottomayor, the winemaker, describes the 2015 vintage as vibrant, full of character and persistent, despite the challenges faced during the harvest. Grapes from different altitudes in the Douro Superior contribute to the wine's complexity, with most of the blend coming from the Quinta da Leda vineyards.
Tasting Notes of the producer: Deep ruby colour. Very intense and complex aroma, with shrubby notes such as olive leaf, olive paste, black fruit, spices, pepper, balsamic, cedar and tobacco box, stony, with discreet and very well integrated wood. On the palate it has a powerful attack, vibrant acidity, lively tannins, notes of spices, red fruits, with a very long and elegant finish.
Grape varieties: Touriga Franca (43%) T. Nacional (40%) Sousão (10%) Tinto Cão (5%) Tinta Roriz (2%)
Dark Ruby. Notes of cedar, woods and mushrooms. Complements of Bergamot, black cherry and wild flower. The tannin is imperial and imposing on first taste. The structure has the solidity of the mother rock but does not lose its elegance and benefits from acidity. The finish is deep, concentrated, stubborn and more peppery, with a touch of tobacco leaf. The austerity reminds us of the 2011, the balance reminds us of the 2008. One thing's for sure: it will last a long time.
The aroma is full of ripe fruit with no hint of over-ripeness, where cherry stands out, accompanied by mint, eucalyptus, cistus, coriander seeds, a herbal nuance and spice from the luxurious barrels. Austere and undeniably fresh with firm, tenacious tannins, but with a fine texture and exemplary polish. A new wine, but already highly refined at this stage. Harmony and a sense of wholeness accompany the whole tasting until the interminable finish (13.5%).
