Tua Rita Lodano Red 2023

Tua Rita Lodano Rosso 2023 is a limited-production Toscana IGT red wine, produced in Suvereto, in the Alta Maremma, where Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti founded Tua Rita in 1984. Known worldwide for cult wines such as Redigaffi, the estate presents a more contemporary and daring expression in Lodano Rosso, centred on Petit Verdot, a grape variety often used in small quantities but here elevated to the leading role. First produced in 2017, the wine is grown in the Colline Metallifere, on iron-rich clay soils, influenced by the sea breeze from the Piombino Channel. Merlot adds volume and generosity, whilst Petit Verdot brings depth, colour, spice and a tension all of its own.

Vinification: Hand-harvested and fermented in wood, followed by 18 months’ ageing in new and used French and American oak barrels, seeking to integrate structure, fruit and complexity without losing elegance.

Tasting notes: An intense and enveloping profile, with ripe black fruits, plum, blackberry, graphite, spices, smoke and tobacco. On the palate it is full-bodied, elegant and deep, with polished tannins, good freshness, a rich texture and a persistent finish. A modern, food-friendly Tuscan red with excellent ageing potential.

Grape varieties: 60% Petit Verdot and 40% Merlot

The Tua Rita 2023 Lodano Rosso marks a significant evolution of this wine composed of 60% Petit Verdot and 40% Merlot from older vines, including some of the first international varieties planted in the Suvereto area. The Merlot dates back decades, but the Petit Verdot was planted more recently in 2013. The wine shows notable freshness and peppery lift. Aging has shifted toward conical oak casks as the estate moves away from barrique, a contrast to the wine’s early years when the first release in 2017 was aged in small American oak barrels. The result is a more transparent and energetic expression that privileges precision, freshness and varietal clarity.

Vegetal at first on the nose, then nutty, then sweet, like the green mallow that hardens into a walnut that then gets sugared and caramelized. The texture is what stands out on the palate, like silk crepe, wrinkled and substantial but then sleek and satiny. All of Tua Rita's wines are unique but Lodano stands out even in that rarefied pack.

Composed of 60% Petit Verdot and 40% Merlot, the 2023 Lodano Rosso is fermented in steel and aged for 18 months in new and second-passage oak. It pours a deep, nearly opaque hue and shows a notably cohesive and refined aromatic profile, with black cherry, dark stone, licorice, menthol, and sage. Full-bodied, it’s one of the lushest wines in the range, with ripe tannins, refreshing acidity, and balanced length, supported by mineral accents. Drink 2026-2038.
