Vinha dos Utras 2023

Vinha dos Utras 2023 is a rare white wine from the Azores Wine Company, crafted by António Maçanita from a very special vineyard in Criação Velha, on Pico. It comes from a plot of vines aged between 60 and 80 years, situated just 80 metres from the sea, planted in volcanic rock soils formed some 1,500 to 2,000 years ago. It is a wine that expresses the Atlantic identity of the Azores in a very pure way: salt, rock, wind, acidity and an almost electric energy. The dominant grape variety is Arinto dos Açores, a unique indigenous variety, particularly important on Pico due to its hardiness and oenological quality.

Vinification: Hand-harvested, sorted on a sorting table, direct pressing and cold settling for 12h. The first press ferments in stainless steel, in horizontal vats, accounting for around 70% of the blend; the second press ferments in used French oak barrels, around 30%, without bâtonnage, for 12 months.

Tasting notes: A deeply saline and stony profile, with notes of chalk, flint, very fresh citrus and enormous complexity. On the palate, it displays impressive energy, brilliant acidity, intense flavour and a very pronounced mineral and maritime character. A serious, rare and vibrant white from Pico, designed for those seeking an Azores wine with character, tension and great gastronomic versatility.

Grape varieties: Over 95% Arinto dos Açores, in a field blend with small percentages of Verdelho, Boal/Malvasia Fina and Alicante Branco/Boal de Alicante

The 2023 Vinha dos Utras comes from Criação Velha, the zone of old vines right next to the sea, 80-year-old plants with low vigor but creating very characterful and deep wines, and 1os Jeirôes, at zero to 20 meters in altitude, with its first rows closest to the sea; these vines give very low yields, and they are suffering from the proximity to the sea, which has a very strong influence on the wine. 2023 was cooler and very complete, with 12.5% alcohol. 800 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2025. It should age magnificently in bottle.
