Niepoort Batuta Red 2023

Niepoort Batuta Red 2023 is one of the Douro’s great reds and one of the most serious expressions of the Niepoort philosophy: wines with depth, yet always characterised by freshness, nuance and elegance. Niepoort is a family-run business since 1842, with its roots in Port wine. It has also become an essential reference in Portuguese still wines, thanks to the vision of Dirk Niepoort and the appreciation of the Douro’s old vines. Batuta is made from old vines at different altitudes and exposures, including the Vinha do Carril, which is over 70 years old and north-facing, and vines near Quinta de Nápoles that are around 100 years old. In 2023, the wine displays great concentration, yet without losing the delicacy and tension that define the house style.

Vinification: Delicate vinification process, with prolonged maceration and minimal extraction, where every detail is carefully considered to produce a complex, refined and elegant wine. The aim is to preserve the identity of the old vines, the natural freshness of the Douro and the precise texture that characterises Batuta.

Tasting notes: Vivid, intense colour. Complex aroma, with notes of plum, red fruits, wild berries, graphite, floral nuances and spices. On the palate it is structured, fresh and elegant, with a silky texture, polished tannins, great balance and a long, persistent and very refined finish.

Grape varieties: Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Rufete, Malvasia Preta and other old-vine varieties

I had already encountered a bottle or two of the 2023 Batuta before I tasted it in the Niepoort cellars in Serpa Pinto in Gaia, and the wine had already caused a big impression on me. It comes from the same two vineyards in Covas do Douro and had four months of maceration/infusion with the skins—but without stems—in concrete and then spent 18 months in oak. It has to be among the finest vintages of Batuta ever (and they think 2024 could be even better, but I didn't taste it). It's dark, ripe and juicy but not overripe or excessive, showy and hedonistic but also serious and elegant. It has a very fine thread and polished and elegant tannins. It has 13.1% alcohol, a pH of 3.57 and 5.2 grams of acidity. 8,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.
