Chateau Lafleur 2023
History
Château Lafleur 2023 is one of the most legendary names in Pomerol, produced since 1872 on the same small, historic family vineyard, now managed by the Guinaudeau family. The estate has become legendary for its unique combination of gravel and clay soils and the genetic heritage of its old vines, which give the wine a unique identity: power, finesse, and remarkable length.
Vintage 2023
The 2023 vintage has proven to be brilliant in the bottle. In a year of long and precise ripening, Lafleur proved to be deep, complex, and resonant, with a rare balance between concentration, freshness, and harmony. William Kelley’s review highlights precisely this: a wine as impressive in the bottle as it was in the tasting, one of those that define an entire vintage.
Vinification
The estate’s philosophy remains centered on obsessive attention to detail, with plot-by-plot work and absolute respect for the personality of each vineyard. In 2023, the blend emerged from a rigorous selection that prioritized purity, texture, and precision, maintaining the Lafleur style
On the nose, it opens with cherries, liqueur-like raspberries, iris, violets, and a fresh touch of mint. On the palate, it is full-bodied, soft, and velvety, with a delicate attack that builds to a broad, luminous, and energetic mid-palate. The fruit is deep, the tannins are silky, and the finish is long, full of purity and harmony.
Grape Varieties
54% Cabernet Franc and 46% Merlot. Approximately 13% ABV.

The 2023 Lafleur has exquisite delineation on the nose, very precise with blackberry and bilberry fruit undergirded by tangible crushed limestone scents. A kind of "cool" aromatics profile, no need to showboat at all. The palate is medium-bodied, is supremely well-balanced with gentle but insistent grip. There is a bewitching symmetry in this Lafleur, a dash of black pepper toward the finish that lingers very long in the mouth, one of the longest that you will find in the vintage. Outstanding
The 2023 Lafleur is just as compelling in bottle as it was in cask. Deep, complex and resonant, it unwinds in the glass to reveal notes of cherries, raspberry liqueur, iris, violets and mint. Full-bodied, supple and velvety, with a suave attack that segues into an enveloping, vibrant, mouth-filling mid-palate, it exhibits breathtaking purity and harmony.
A stunning, nervy nose, showing chalky berries, eggshells, ripe plums and a touch of gin botanicals and cocoa powder. Medium- to full-bodied and precise, with superfine, fresh, close-knit tannins. Really long and integrated. A blend of 54% bouchet (cabernet franc) and 46% merlot. Drink or hold.
Iris and violet flowers greet you on the opening beats, and it's a little more open at this early stage than is sometimes the case with this most profound of wines. Crushed red roses, squid ink, salinity, just pure finesse with blueberry and cassis fruits that hug the palate. As it inches open creamy cocoa bean and dark chocolate appear, with an expansive floral aspect and pumice-scraping tannins, vibrant and humming. The team here always knows how to skilfully construct a wine, and there are, as ever, hidden depths. Needs a good 8 to 10 years before reaching its peak. 25% new oak for ageing, unusually generous yields, around 40hl/h.
