Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos Saint-Jacques 2016

Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos Saint-Jacques 2016 comes from Gevrey-Chambertin, one of Burgundy's most coveted 1er Crus (often treated as an “implicit Grand Cru”). The vineyard (southeast exposure) got its name after a statue of Saint Jacques was found there; today there is a chapel on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago. Divided into five “strips” between domains, Rousseau owns about a third (2.21 ha of 6.70 ha). The proximity of the Combe Lavaux helps to maintain freshness, and the very fertile and stony soils (loam, limestone, and clay) give volume and typicity. 2016 was a difficult year in Burgundy, marked by severe frosts at the end of April and then a hot, dry period from July to September; the harvest began around September 20. In the reds, 2016 combines fruit, spice, and great length, requiring time in the bottle.

Vinification: At the Domaine, practices have changed very little over the generations, with rigorous monitoring of fermentations and a classic élevage, designed to preserve the purity and depth of Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes: Fresh and very harmonious terroir, with strong but well-integrated tannins. Dominant aromas of cassis and small black fruits; on the palate it is clear, balanced, and with a particularly intense sensation.

Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir

This stunning Gevrey-Chambertain 1er Cru is driven by a laser beam of vibrant red fruit that refracts into a thousand shades on the concentrated and very focused palate. There must be some new oak in here somewhere, but we can’t find it. Stunning balance on the long and very refined finish. Superb! Drink or hold.

Gorgeous aromas of rose, strawberry, cherry and sandalwood are enhanced by licorice, earth and spice notes on the palate in this complex, harmonious red. Silky and racy, this channels a minerally graphite element on the long aftertaste. Best from 2022 through 2045. 84 cases imported.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is showing brilliantly from bottle, soaring from the glass with aromas of raspberries, Griotte cherries, peonies, rich soil tones, smoked meats and dark chocolate, framed by a deft application of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a rich and multidimensional core that's framed by refined tannins and a lively spine of acidity, concluding with a long and pungently intense finish.

Very refined on the nose. Lots of life and prancing on the palate. Really very fine and the vineyard speaks so much more articulately than the producer. Soars on the palate. Wonderful spread of flavours on the finish. Very fine tannins. Gorgeous.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is blessed with a bouquet of real pedigree: very complex mixture of red and black brambly fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and rose petal aromas. The harmony and delineation is outstanding. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, pliant tannins that lend this Clos Saint-Jacques symmetry and poise. Fresh and vibrant, it never relinquishes any of its breeding and tension. The finish is persistent and utterly captivating. Fabulous. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The Clos St-Jacques is lovely, wafting from the glass with notes of griotte cherry, dried cep, rose petal and rosehip, with a classy framing of cedary, smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and fine-grained, with an elegant chassis of tannin, a sappy core of fruit. It has a lovely sense of completeness and should develop beautifully in the cellar. Drinkin Window 2026 - 2050.
