Quinta do Noval 50 Year Old Tawny Port
Quinta do Noval 50 Year Old Tawny Port
Quinta do Noval Tawny 50 Year Old is the top of the range of aged Tawnies from this historic Douro house, where great wines have been produced since the early 18th century. This extremely rare Port is the result of a blend of wines from the Quinta with an average age of 50 years, a true ‘liquid memory’ of the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia and a cult item for lovers of very old Tawny Port.
Vinification: The base wines are vinified using the traditional Douro method, with short maceration of the grapes and subsequent fortification with wine spirit, preserving the fruit and structure. After fermentation, they are transferred to old 640-litre casks, where they spend half a century evolving, always under regular tasting and top-ups by the winemaker, until they reach the ideal point to be integrated into the final blend.
Tasting Notes: Deep golden-amber colour with greenish hues and mahogany reflections. The nose is extremely refined: dried fruits (walnut, hazelnut, toasted almond), fig and raisin, candied orange peel, caramel, honey, beeswax and delicate notes of spice. In the mouth, it is incredibly smooth and concentrated, viscous but balanced by lively acidity; layers of dried fruit, citrus and toffee linger in a very long, sophisticated and unforgettable finish. A great meditation Port, perfect for ending a meal or accompanying dried fruit and fine cigars.

This is extremely rich in feel, with a buckwheat syrup note wrapped around a core of unctuous date, warmed pecan pie, Turkish coffee, Brazil nut, hazelnut husk and halva flavors that won't quit, while the marriage of flattering sweetness and dry cut results in a ridiculously long finish. A stunner. Drink now. 840 cases made, 20 cases imported.
Nuanced, deep nose, at once broody and elegant, with dried rose petals, cedar and toasted walnuts against a backdrop of plum and sweet spice. IImpressive focus and definition on the palate with perfectly etched flavours of dried cranberry, dried fig, red apple and pomegranate molasses over an earthy layer of shiitake mushrooms, tobacco leaf and seaweed. Long and linear, with poised honeyed unctuosity on the mid palate and a beautiful tannic structure lined with Earl Grey and bergamot. Tingling cardamom, nutmeg and honey-glazed almonds linger on the finish.
