Vinho da Corda dos Profetas 2023
Vinho da Corda dos Profetas 2023
Vinho da Corda dos Profetas 2023, from Companhia de Vinhos dos Profetas e dos Villões, on the island of Porto Santo, is a signature white wine that highlights the tradition of ‘vinho da corda’ (rope wine), obtained from the must of the last pressing (more concentrated and oxidised), produced with the indigenous Listrão (Listan Blanco/Palomino Fino) and Caracol grape varieties. It pairs well with rich, spicy and refined dishes, such as octopus stew and fish stew.
Vinification: The grapes were harvested manually on the island of Porto Santo. Strict selection in the vineyard, with some vines harvested more than once, picking the ripest grapes first and the rest in a second harvest. Whole bunches were pressed directly into decanting tanks, separating three fractions, without any use of SO2 until the end of fermentation, in order to allow pre-oxidation of the must and a fuller spontaneous fermentation. From the last fraction of the press, the ‘Corda must’ was transferred to old Porto Santo wine barrels.
Tasting Notes: Golden yellow colour, almost copper, very intense nose, caramelised salt, somewhere between a Madeira and a Sherry, unique and singular, with ferrous, iodised and intense notes. Very full-bodied on the palate, full, super concentrated and very persistent.
Grape Varieties: Listrão (aka Listan Blanco, Palomino Fino) and Caracol

This has an amber-golden hue, kind of like a young amontillado. The nose is really fascinating, with orange blossoms and hints of dried peaches, kumquats and sliced nectarines. The palate is vibrant and textural, with some tannins. The grapes come from sunny, warm vineyards planted on sandy soils by the sea. This is made from the last press, hence the deep color and more extraction. It’s a blend of listrao (known in Spain as palomino) and the local caracol. Drink or hold.
Deep golden coppery colour. Highly distinctive aroma that smells, paradoxically, both sour and rich, of bitter orange and ripe quince plus a note of bruised apple. As Maçanita says in his notes, the aroma is somewhere between Madeira and Jerez. Iodine, salty. For a wine of just 12%, this has immense presence in the mouth, almost overwhelming intensity, and very high acidity. A long, salty, demanding finish. The flavour goes on and on. I would love to see how this ages – very well, I think. So, so salty and yet the ripe fruit is there to mop it up. Outstanding.
Old vineyard strip, must from the last pressings. Orange colour. Aroma with caramelised notes, salty too, hot iron and orange peel. Full and concentrated on the palate, maintaining freshness, lots of flavour, all in an oxidised profile reminiscent of Sherry wines.
