Chateau d'Yquem 'Y' Ygrec 2022

Y 2022 is a dry white wine produced at Château d'Yquem in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux. In the past, it was made at the end of the harvest, with the last bunches. These grapes, affected by Botrytis cinerea, but never with more than 15 per cent potential alcohol, gave rise to a very unusual wine. In 1996 it changed, but without compromising its unique character, to be more in tune with the times, displaying the essential freshness of a great modern white wine. In 2004, they started producing every year. This is how, by deliberate choice, certain plots of Sauvignon Blanc are now picked at the beginning of the harvest. These are complemented by Sémillon grapes, picked when they have reached maximum ripeness, the botrytis has just appeared, and the skins have taken on a pinkish colour.

Vinification: Grapes are pressed 3 to 4 times, with increasing pressures that produce lower volumes but higher sugar levels. Fermented in new oak barrels for maximum control of small batches.

Tasting notes: Can show stone fruit, tangerine, toast and vanilla when young and develops a rich complexity with age. In the best vintages, it can be kept for 50 years or more. Yquem also produces a dry Bordeaux Blanc called Y. This wine is produced mainly from Sauvignon Blanc picked at the beginning of the harvest, with small amounts of Semillon and a little botrytis.

Grape Varieties: Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc

Pale yellow, green hints, silver reflections. On the nose, subtle hints of lime blossom, pear and orange, notes of lime zest, a pleasant herbal savouriness and fine botrytis nuances underlaid with notes of vanilla and blanched almonds. Elegant with white Pome fruit, taut and tightly meshed, nuances of pear, finesse-rich acid structure and subtle notes of salt and white almonds on the long, lasting finish. An elegant and harmonious food wine with definite ageing potential.
