DuMOL Finn Pinot Noir 2022 is a superb Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California, produced by one of the most respected estates of the Californian ‘New Classicism’ movement. Founded in 1996, DuMOL has built its reputation on small-batch wines from cool, meticulously tended vineyards, where viticultural precision is as important as winemaking. The Finn is one of the winery’s most iconic cuvées and captures the beauty of the south-western Russian River Valley: a Pinot Noir that is at once deep, fresh, textured and elegant. The 2022 vintage is a blend of 60% Bressay Estate Vineyard and 40% Occidental Road Vineyard, vines aged around 23 years, harvested on 19 and 24 August.

Winemaking: Produced from the Calera, D943 and mass-selection clones, it was aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which were new, from the coopers Atelier Centre France and Mercurey. Production was very limited: 740 cases of 75 cl, 24 magnums and just 10 3-litre bottles.

Tasting notes: The producer describes a rich and sophisticated profile, with red cherry, kirsch, cassis, lavender, tapenade, crushed stone and orange zest. On the palate, it reveals profound purity, succulent fruit, a silky texture, energy and vibrant elegance. A powerful yet still restrained Pinot Noir, with great ageing potential between 2026 and 2034.

Power and richness come with grace and balance in this top-tier wine from Dumol. So drenched in berries and dark cherries, then backed by vivid tannins and brilliant acidity on a ripe-tasting but tangy palate. Forest floor, black tea, bay leaves, cloves and cedar. Medium-bodied yet muscular and structured for potential long-term aging. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.

The ruby-hued 2023 Pinot Noir Finn comes two-thirds from sandy soils and one-third from clay soils. It has fantastic balance, with pristine notes of preserved cranberries, raspberries, fresh flowers, and wet stones. Medium-bodied, it floats on the palate with fine tannins that are well-defined, refreshing acidity, and a seamless feel all around. A beautiful wine with a chalky mineral texture and a long, floating finish, it’s always a pleasure to taste this cuvée, and this vintage is no exception. Drink 2026-2046.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Finn is one of the most sensual, supple wines in this range. Soft contours wrap around a core of black cherry, plum, espresso, dried herbs and leather. The 2023 possesses gorgeous mid-palate resonance and texture, all of which enhance its decidedly extroverted personality. This is classic Russian River Pinot.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Finn comes mainly from Dumol’s Bressay Estate Vineyard, plus a smaller portion from the Occidental Road Vineyard. Grapes were harvested on September 15 and 25, and the wine was matured for 15 months in 40% new French oak. It has multifaceted aromas of blackberry, blueberry, juniper, iron and garrigue. The medium-bodied palate is powerful and energetic with intense, kaleidoscopic flavors structured by refined, silky tannins. It’s balanced by vibrant acidity that lures you back to the glass for another sip, and it has a very long, layered finish. It unfurled dramatically for several days after being opened and should be long lived in the cellar. 900 cases were made.
