Tua Rita Keir Red 2023
Tua Rita Keir Red 2023
Tua Rita Keir Red 2023 is a limited-production Toscana Syrah IGT and one of the most distinctive expressions from Tua Rita, an estate founded in 1984 by Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti in Suvereto, in the Alta Maremma. Known for its uncompromising quality and cult wines such as Redigaffi, the estate explores a more traditional and artisanal approach here. Keir was Tua Rita’s first production to be vinified and aged in amphorae, an ancient method that allows the varietal characteristics of Syrah to be revealed in a very pure form. The 2023 vintage confirms this intense and unique character, combining the Mediterranean energy of the Colline Metallifere with freshness, spice and great elegance.
Vinification: Vinification and ageing in amphorae, seeking to highlight the expression of the grape variety, preserve the fruit and give the wine a more natural and enveloping texture. The producer also indicates a further maturation of around 6 months in used French oak barrels, followed by bottle ageing prior to release.
Tasting notes: Aromatic and deep, displaying wild cherry, dried herbs, mint, pipe tobacco and spices. On the palate it is elegant, supple and full of character, with good freshness, fine tannins, an enveloping texture and a long, lively and highly gastronomic finish.

What a wonderful wine. Aromas of black and green olives, chocolate and hazelnuts. Medium-bodied with creamy tannins and a caressing finish. It’s so seductive and beautiful. A joy to drink. Made in terra cotta amphorae with skins and some whole clusters for four months and then aged four or five months in seasoned barrels. Terrific wine that emphasizes character and drinkablity. Sustainable. Drink now or hold.
The Tua Rita 2023 Keir Rosso is made from Syrah with 20% whole clusters, a choice driven by a desire to use mature stems and healthy clusters. The wine shows ripe, dark fruit flavors with pronounced spice, offering plush concentration and a touch of sweetness that reflects the warmth of the vintage. Fermentation and élevage include the use of orcio, a more oxidative vessel made with Tuscan red clay, which contributes to the wine’s open and expressive profile. Broad and sun-kissed in character, this is a powerful, slightly weighty Syrah with an assertive Mediterranean identity.
‘Syrah is not only adapting to climate change but is a noble variety of the Tuscan coast,’ states Giovanni Frascolla. And what a way to back up his claim: vinified in cocciopesto with around 20% whole-bunch fruit, it undergoes six months of skin contact which he describes as ‘just an infusion’. Cocoa, black berries and dark cherries are accompanied by some minty herbs. Slick, tight and soft-fruited, it has some beautiful sapidity on the mid-palate, with fine, chalky tannins in support. The finish is fresh and persistent.
The 2023 Syrah Keir, from a single vineyard planted in 2004 and aged in amphora, pours a deep youthful red and is refined and expressive with aromas of black olive, blackberry, red plum, sage, and wet stone. Full-bodied yet balanced, it offers plush tannins, freshness, and an elegant, composed structure. It’s an approachable and refined Syrah, from limestone soils in front of the Per Sempre Vineyard. Drink 2026-2032.
