Chateau d'Issan 2023
Chateau d’Issan 2023
Chateau d’Issan 2023 is one of Margaux’s historic names, with origins dating back to the 12th century and a reputation built up over the centuries, to the point of being served at European royal weddings. Classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this château combines tradition and modern precision, now under the management of the Cruse and Lorenzetti families. Located on a privileged terroir of deep gravel soils near the estuary, d’Issan produces wines that perfectly reflect the elegance and charm of Margaux. The 2023 vintage was marked by challenging weather conditions, but the diversity of soils and rigorous viticultural practices yielded grapes of great balance, resulting in a fresh, harmonious and highly expressive wine.
Vinification: The approach is highly plot-specific, with fermentation in stainless steel and wooden vats tailored to each lot. Extraction is gentle and precise, prioritising finesse and aromatic purity, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, carefully adjusted to integrate structure and elegance.
Tasting notes: According to the producer, it presents a delicate and refined bouquet, with notes of fresh red fruits, violet and subtle spicy nuances. On the palate, it reveals a silky texture, fine tannins, balanced acidity and great freshness, culminating in an elegant, persistent and typically Margaux finish.
Grape varieties: Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small plots of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot

Pleasing Cabernet-dominated aromas. Palate firm, fresh and structured but a bit recalcitrant today. Touch austere – needs to settle.
Lots of plum, violet, blackberry, flint and orange blossom aromas follow through to a medium to full body with a solid core of fruit, creamy tannins and a minerally, flinty and crushed stone texture in the aftertaste. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 2.5% cabernet franc and 2.5% petit verdot. Drink after 2028.
The 2023 D'Issan shows excellent potential, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, pen ink and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping palate that's rich, fleshy and charming, with lively acids, good depth at the core and a long, sapid finish. It's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Fine tannins, well balanced, inky and powerful tempered by oyster shell salinity. Chalky tannins with touch of En Primeur austerity, well constructed, full of cocoa bean, cassis, liqourice root, classical balance, highly spiced, rose petals and blueberry, great quality. First time not to have Malbec in the main Issan wine since the purchase of the neighbouring estate Pontac Lynch in 2020. 50% new oak, 32hl/h yield.
Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate rim brightening. Nuances of black cherry, blackberry and cassis, candied violet, fresh orange peel. Complex, fine extract sweetness, ripe tannins, good freshness, lingers, delicate aftertaste of light caramel on the finish, sure maturity and certain ageing potential.
